George Santayana wrote this quote in 1905. 1905! Think about this a moment. This quote about the importance of remembering history so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past was written before WWI and WWII. We were slow to learn, but learn we did.
We saw the past and remembered it so it could not be repeated. We called out instances in which it seemed like it was coming back. Nobody wants another Nazi Germany. We must learn, however, that just like a virus that mutates, the danger may look a bit different each time.
