🍃 The Offshore Wind Megathread 🍃

How many times have you seen on TV or read on Twitter that wind power is cheap and that's where the Government should focus its efforts?

Let's have a look at why that isn't remotely true.

#windenergy #greenenergy #renewables Image
@BrknMan @aDissentient @7Kiwi MW not GW, it's late.
@BrknMan @aDissentient @7Kiwi I will say its possible for outliers. HR3 is a shallow, near shore farm and it was built before turbine costs shot up.

That's not the trend were seeing in the UK.

In 2018 I created an ongoing #ClimateEd thread about the #ClimateCrisis.

Five years later, it's time for an update.✅

This #ClimateAction thread has a TON of info to help EVERYONE get #ClimateBrainy about the #science and facts of #climatechange.📊

Save, share and visit often! Image
Here's the old thread, which I'll no longer be updating:

It still contains MANY informative articles and links from reputable sources, so it's worth revisiting, even if some info isn't all that up-to-date.

The old tag was #Climate_Ed.

New: #ClimateEd👍
This NEW thread will contain PLENTY of top-tier posts from MANY solid #climatescience contributors, so come back regularly to see what's been added.

#Climatebrawl folks especially, as you can use these posts to #refute #deniers handily.

Don't argue with any trolls, however! 🧌 Image

Excellent talk by Simon Sharpe @INETOxford just now, pointing out how the #climate crisis challenges economic #orthodoxy in several ways. Spoiler 🔥"Economics as a discipline has forgotten what the scientific method is" (@camjhep pointing to #heterodox ideas in defense)🧵
💡The premise: To meet our #climate goals, we need to reduce emissions globally by about 8% per year by 2030, as compared to the 1,5% p.a. achieved so far - hence the title of his book #FiveTimesFaster
1⃣ An #economy going through the rapid and far-reaching systems #transition this requires (acc. to @IPCC_CH) cannot be analysed in terms of #equilibrium, a sitation in which "nobody has any immediate reason to change their actions" according to the Oxford Dictionary of Economics. Image

🧵| G7 leaders will meeting in Hiroshima🇯🇵 next week & they need to talk #grids⚡️

According to @Reuters and @e3g, to scale up electricity grids & storage infrastructure to meet our #renewables goals by the mid-2030s, policymakers must turn targets into a clear "grid agenda". Image
2/3 | Grid interconnection is a strength in the EU and we must continue working together to develop clear outlines for new #electricity infrastructure, notes @FactFisching.

The conversation about #SouthAfrica's looming #electricitycrisis HAS to include coal.

Why? Let's have a look 🧵🧵🧵 Image
2/
Our energy sector has the 🥈 highest Green House Gas emissions of any the World's Industrializing countries (the G20) 🥲🌍🥲. Coal is responsible for roughly 85% of our energy generation 🤯. #GHG

Coal is now less #efficient 📉
The amount of energy required to get coal to create electricity is now higher, so basically nowadays… it’s giving us back less than before!

🧵| What lessons can the 🇺🇸#US learn from the 🇪🇺#EU's 🔆#EnergyTransition?

As states and the Biden administration move towards #electrification, the US needs to rapidly expand its electric⚡️#grid to tap the potential of 🌱#renewables and lower carbon emissions. Image
2/5 | New York recently became the first US state to require its public power provider to generate all electricity from clean energy by 2030.

This will require more connections between renewables and the 🔌#grid.

3/5 | Plugging in 🚙cars, 🏠homes, and 🏭factories to renewables is a cornerstone of Biden’s plan to cut emissions, which means electricity demand in the US could roughly double by 2050, even as overall energy use goes down.

Today and tomorrow, @G7 #Energy ministers meet in #Japan – a country, often considered a “laggard” on #energytransition. What is 🇯🇵’s energy system like and why is it so reluctant to step up #decarbonisation of its economy? A 🧵 1/19

env.go.jp/en/earth/g7/20…
The “usual” arguments by the 🇯🇵 government when confronted with lack of both action and ambition on #energytransition:
1. #Japan is resource-poor
2. Japan’s geography limits #renewables build-out
3. Technologies & Innovation will solve the transition

How true are they? 2/19
Japan is indeed poor in some resources, most notably #fossilfuels. Fossil fuel based, its energy system is 88% dependent on #oil, #LNG and #coal imports. It has one of the least self-sufficient energy systems, dependent on #oil & gas from #MiddleEast & #coal from #Australia. 3/19 ImageImage

Yesterday, the EU Council and Parliament reached a provisional agreement on the renewable energy directive.

Here's what it could mean for #hydrogen
The agreement sets a target of 42.5% renewable energy in the EU's overall energy mix by 2030.

The agreement also includes sector-specific targets where the role of #hydrogen becomes more prominent.

This quick analysis is based on the press release: consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press…
For reference, these are the shares of #renewables across sectors in the EU in 2021:

21.8% overall renewables

37.5% renewables in electricity

22.9% renewables in heating and cooling

9.1% renewables in transport

Little 🧵about #climatechange

I consider myself non-politically aligned; because I want to be able to talk to everyone about issues that I think are important. I do seek allies, and I have many. But they know, I'm willing to reach out to other people.
About #climatechange I do think it is serious, but I have actually read all the literature to be able to explain why. Most just yell stuff into the void.

I am worried about the tropics. couple billion people live there. Worried about water & Crops.
#climate for those who don't know, isn't just a sunny day in December or Frost in April... You see people post stuff like, how can it be #climatechange if... and then you see a picture of snow.

Yesterday @Greenpeace released a "research" report asking financial institutions like @Fidelity support changing Bitcoin's code from PoW to PoS.

Let's dive in why this is in bad faith & #TheCodeisPerfect
1/
GPs "research" is the usual misinformation abt how bitcoin works & energy use that has been debunked by *real* climate activists in Bitcoin

> 50% of Bitcoin's network is ZERO emissions, period. Emissions are DECLINING. Carbon NEGATIVE is coming. See 👇🏽

GP is 'concerned' Bitcoin is accelerating a climate crisis, fueled by "Big Finance"

My latest. Last week, @AirDistrict approved regs banning #natgas furnaces & water heaters. It's latest example of CA policymakers forcing residents to use electricity instead of gas. These regs are happening while CA's electricity costs are soaring. 1/x

Two weeks before the BAAQMD passed its ban on natural gas appliances, the Energy Information Administration released data showing that California’s residential electricity prices jumped by 14.7% in 2022. 2/x
That’s only the latest increase. Since 2008, when @Schwarzenegger signed an executive order requiring the state’s utilities to obtain a third of the electricity they sell from renewables by 2020, all-sector electricity prices in California have soared by 80%. 3/x

The EIA released its Annual Energy Outlook
Here's 15 forecasts that went right and wrong over the past decade - a thread #oott #oil #natgas #renewables
Oil Demand: In 2011, oil demand was forecast to be 19.1 Mbbls/d by 2022 (actual: 17.7 Mbbls/d) Image
Part of the energy revisions reflect changes to U.S. population growth (which has been revised down 6% since the 2018 - the first year with forecasts out to 2050). By 2050, U.S. population is expected now at 370 mln vs. 395 mln people previously. Image
U.S. Crude Supply: In 2011, oil production was forecast to be 3.8 Mbbls/d by 2022 (actual: 9.6 Mbbls/d).
2050 production forecast has been revised 5% higher y/y to 11.2 Mbbls/d. But overall, for the next ~30 years, the EIA expects production to remain mostly flat #permian #bakken Image

The @EU_Commission today adopted a revised #EU #ElectricityMarketDesign.

It will preserve the benefits of our electricity market and help reduce the costs of producing & using energy in Europe, through more #renewables.
Two instruments will be key in enhancing the stability & predictability of energy costs across the EU.

First, Power Purchase Agreements will improve access to markets and act as drivers for investment in renewables – essential to reach our #EUGreenDeal goals.
Second, Member States will guarantee a stable price to producers & consumers through Contracts for Difference, which will foster support for new renewable energy investment.

I call on the #EuropeanParliament to treat this file as a priority!

The @EU_Commission's consultation on #electricity market design closes tonight.

Here's our pan-EU team's analysis of the challenges ahead as the Commission moves to propose reform.

Five potential crunch points:

1) #renewables revenue risk: support CfDs or PPAs? (1/) Image
2) Role of government: prioritise consumer protection or investor confidence?

3) Consumer tariffs: emphasise importance of hedging or demand flexibility?

4) Allocation of resources: support many consumers or target certain groups? (2/)
5) Role of utilities: regulate retail pricing or better integrate futures markets?

See which way we think each debate will lean above. (3/3)

This AM I entered the uranium sector in a small manner. Been watching the market and learning for some time now. I bought pure play physical uranium trust units. Not explorers, not producers. I may or may not buy producers, possibly explorers.
Given the spot price of uranium is a secret until the last day of each month and the longitudinal spot price suffered immensely post-Fukushima now is a moment to act. Others, bolder, perhaps much smarter, moves a year or so ago.👏
There have been some instantial minor see-saws for the last decade, but the market has gradually strengthened and a number of factors are bringing nuclear power into the public psyche.
