Hi! I'm a WGA Strike Captain and Assistant Lot Coordinator at Universal! I'm looking for some reliable humans who can take a volunteer shift every now and then as a runner for our lot. WGA, #PreWGA, or in-support-of-the-WGA all welcome
Runners work with our lot coordinators (who are all incredible humans) and gate captains (another group of incredible humans) to make sure every gate has water, snacks, and anything else our picketers need! And listen, I'm biased, but our picketers are INCREDIBLE HUMANS.
Runner shifts are either 8:45am-1pm or 1:30pm-5:30pm Mon-Fri. Runners help us set up (AM shift!) and break down at the end of the day (PM shift). DM if you're interested in helping your WGA writers, sister unions & supporters at the Universal picket lines!

If you’re #PreWGA or a non-writer, here are some ideas on how you can support the #WGAstrike
1) If you’re in the L.A. or NYC areas, join a picket line. Coordinate w/ friends to ensure that key locations have ample numbers of picketers...
1/
Picket schedules & locations may be found here: wgacontract2023.org/strike/picket-… you’re local to L.A., here is picket line sign-up sheet prepared by @ginagemeni, @chandra7thomas and @NerrisNassiri.
2/
2) #CancelNetflixAndChill Wherever you’re based, cancel your streaming subscriptions (esp. Netflix). If the streamer asks why you’re cancelling, say that you refuse to support a company that doesn’t support the writers whose work generates the profits that line its pockets...

Thread: So you placed in a contest, what now?

How to take that momentum and query managers, tap producers and hustle like a pro. #screenwriting

1- Someone out there will love your writing. You have to find THEM. They don’t find you.
2- Screenwriting contests are a lot like the Olympics. If you WIN, reps will come to you. If you place, you need to reach out to them. Start with a query letter for managers and producers interested in #preWGA writers. Here’s a basic template:
3- Hi (firstname)
Share a connection you have to this person- you know another client of theirs or admire their work. Share your contest placement and DNA- like if you’re BIPOC/WOC/AAPI or LGBTQ, why you wrote the story.

Just got harassed on LinkedIn by the same new writer who harassed me months ago. Had to report and block. Here's what NOT to do if you are a new writer asking people for help or advice THREAD #WritingCommunity #preWGA 1/
This guy approached me for help on a film project. I thought he meant help from me as a development producer/script writer (because I do this A LOT and it's right on my LinkedIn profile), so I quoted my rate and all the services he would get from me. No biggie, right? 2/
He responded with this 3/

WRITERS - this week, I'm going to be all about teaching what I know when it comes to PITCHING.
For so many writers -- at ALL levels, from #prewga to showrunner -- leveling up your pitching game represents a huge opportunity to better your career.
Here's a thread 🧵
If you're in the position to sell a show, knowing how to deliver a PHENOMENAL pitch (versus just a "good" pitch where you "let the story speak for itself") can be the difference between Co-EP and Showrunner.
If you've never been staffed, knowing how to give a truly awesome pitch can turn a Creative Exec from "a contact" to "a huge fan."

AVAIL for staffing. I just wrapped up in a room as a staff writer. If you have LL one hour drama needs, I’M AVAIL. Now I’m gonna go into a thread about some of the things I’ve observed/learned/reinforced etc. This isn’t a “how to,” so take w/grain of salt. Hope it’s helpful.
The SR has to want to invest in you esp as LL. Of course, script has to be knockout to get the SR mtg & your persona has to be a fit BUT SR has to want you and invest in you and your growth. This sometimes can trump even a mediocre script etc if they believe in your voice.
Related to that if you’re like me where you did fwsp, asst, sold stuff and no dice. Know it’s not personal. You’re doing okay and if someone hasn’t told you you’re awesome, I am. Sometimes being qualified is a part of it. Now it’s a matter not of if but when. Hang in there.

Twitter hive. I’ve been meeting a lot of aspiring TV writers looking to break in . I started making up a list of resources on where ppl can find room or general entry level jobs bc it saves me time to give this list. 1/6
So far I have AA fb grps, the women fb grps, A Game for Asian writers, Asians in Animation on Insta, Hollylist, Entertainment Careers dot com, Staff Me Up, UTA joblist, discord, Prod Weekly ($$$ tho), checking company sites directly, tracking #Prewga on Twitter . What else? 2/6
Also somewhat related I highly rec working in TV post or in representation on a lit desk and transitioning that way, a lot of zoom rooms have eliminated the wtr pa job. Working these other jobs can help you make connections to get into TV. 3/6

Hey #preWGA re-posting a thread for tips on TV writing fellowship application essays and cover letters...

1/8) Above all else, you want to tell the best story about yourself that you can. They will judge you on this essay before they even look at your script.
2/8) Make sure that speaks to what made you the writer you are today. How did that experience shape your view of the world and your voice as a writer?
3/8) Make the story short but compelling. Pretend it's a writing sample (because it is).

Some people were curious about how the TV #writersroom works, so I thought I'd let you peek behind the curtain. For those of you who don't know me, my name’s Shawn, I’ve been support staff on nine seasons’ worth of TV writers’ rooms (always support, never staffed), 1/
so I know a thing or two.

And for anyone looking for a #preWGA writer, I’ve got a killer pilot about werewolves in Los Angeles. #pleasereadmyscreenplay

Now let's have some fun. 2/
What is it?

The Writers’ Room (or writer’s room – there’s no real agreement on which is the correct terminology, but since there’s more than one writer, I’ll insist on using the possessive plural) is a metonym for the insular little community tasked with writing a TV show. 3/

KNOW YOUR WORTH. A thread.

I was recently asked to interview for a writing job at a small YouTube channel with decent animation on their content, but poorly written stories. They had a solid number of followers & as a non-WGA writer, I thought it was a good opportunity. 1/11
As part of the application process, they asked for a creative resume. I sent mine in and almost immediately, someone replied saying they'd be interested in my continuing the process. My resume is fine, but not yet so impressive it would warrant an immediate YES. Red flag 1. 2/11
They said they wanted a writing sample. I offered to send scripts, links to shorts I wrote/directed, short stories, poems, or a segment of one of my novels. They said no. ... They had a "writing test" they wanted me to complete. 3/11

So I had a lit manager that I queried try to gaslight me and just wanted to share because maybe someone can learn from this. Just FYI — I’ve already made up my mind as you’ll see at the end of this (super long 😅) #thread. #screenwriting
Above is the last email from our correspondence. Seems normal/reasonable at first, but the background is needed to get the full context. Keep scrolling.
But first — though it can be a gross waste of time in terms of ROI, I’m all for querying. I know there’s debate around it and a lot of people proverbially screaming “queries don’t work!” And I will concede, they’re probably the least effective way to get a rep to read your script

Being a scriptwriter, networking sounds like a nightmare, right? GAH. Maybe you live in the middle of nowhere, or are mega-introverted (me!), or feel too new to offer much. But you REALLY want to be in a writers room! THREAD 1/ #PreWGA #NationalWritingDay
Or you want to contact an awesome Director! Or you want to collaborate with a group of creatives! What can you do? As a tv writer, and a Uni lecturer who teaches networking to tv and film students, and I’ve gathered specific tricks, tips and ideas 2/
(mostly gathered from my years of humiliating mistakes)- that could help you kick the door down and get into this world. I hope you find this useful to get into this TV/Film world. Buckle up baby! 3/

If you are a new comedy writer struggling with your pilot script, man I get it. UGH. It feels like you hit brick wall after brick wall. It’s exhausting going after your passion when you feel you are going it alone. (THREAD) #PreWGA #screenwriting 1/
I’ve spent 14 years in tv, the last four years studying comedy scriptwriting, reading scripts, and giving notes. Here are some tips, questions and resources I’ve collated (stolen?) from the giants that could help you. 2/
And then at the end of this thread I’ll bear my soul a bit (ouch) with a few painful lessons to encourage you. This list is by no means comprehensive and there are a huge variety of perspectives, but here’s what helped me big time. 3/

Writer rule of thumb: You have to have one sample. You HAVE to. You should have more, but that's the bearest of minimums. Whether that's a play, a short story, a pilot, a feature or something else. You must have a piece of writing that's your calling card if you want to be hired.
Most showrunners will want to read something original. Pilots, plays and features scripts are your best bet. Some are willing to read short stories, graphic novels, specs & other material. But pilots and features are where it’s at. Make sure they’re in good shape and ready go.
Not only do I read all the #wgastaffingboost tweets, I use them to recommend writers to executives, producers and showrunners. I want to get writers hired. Whether you’re already in the WGA or #PreWGA if I reach out to you & say it’s go-time be ready to GO!

!!THREAD ALERT!!

Fellow screenwriters!

A thread about shoutouts, boosts, suggestions, and support!

#specscriptshoutout #prewgaboost #PreWGA @TheWRACGroup @SpecScriptShout
(1/16)
It's been wonderful to see all the support everyone's been giving the past few months, at all levels of the community.

I wanted to highlight TWO things I think we should keep in mind as we continue this work.
(2/16)
FIRST. I'll start with an anecdote. I received many read requests here (after @SamWritesMovies gave me a little boost) and most gave a generous #SpecScriptShoutOut after their read (3/16)
