Many people asking us about #bumblebees at the moment - why they’re seeing them on the ground - so here’s a quick thread to explain what they’re up to. Please #retweet as every #queen that survives means a new colony that gets to exist & produce new queen #bees for next year! 1/8
#Bumblebee queens emerge in early spring from #hibernation and immediately need to feed - that’s why early flowering plants are so important. Apart from feeding their mission at this time is to find a suitable site to establish a nest. Hence you will observe queens flying low 2/8

What is a pond?! We’re excited to announce our new publication rdcu.be/cP6tH in @SciReports that compiles existing scientific and legal pond definitions, compares how ponds functionally compare to lakes and wetlands, and proposes an evidence-based pond definition. 1/n Image
While seemingly everyone knows a pond when they see one, we lack a universal pond definition. The confusion causes debates over how many lakes a state has (cough, @mndnr and @WDNR) and creates challenges in upscaling global GHG emissions for ponds, lakes, and wetlands. 2/n
@SciReports Here, we found that existing definitions are largely qualitative– calling ponds small and shallow. 3/n Image

Male #GCNs grow ornamental crests every year during aquatic breeding period.
As UK seasons become less distinct, #pond arrival times are less predictable.
So what is happening with #crest development?🧐

We photographed >100 individual #newts over 2 breeding periods and tracked changes in crest size + shape using #ImageJ software.

Does early arrival = Early growth peak?
Or ⬆ growth period i.e. potential mating advantage?
