Let’s talk about taking care of Soldiers. A SFC had issues with childcare due to the pandemic and his wife has high risk pregnancy resulting in him missing work while she is hospitalized. The unit decided the best COA was to chapter the SFC with almost 18 years. /1
When the SFC pointed out the leave takes him over 18 years and requires separate rules. The command changed the separation date to yesterday (28 Jan) with no notice while his wife is in hospital giving birth (basically terminating Tricare). /2
The unit was kind enough to fill out the statement of charges and clear him from Army without his knowledge. But hey, they sent him wishes since they knew he was at hospital with wife. #peoplefirst

I anticipated reading 'Leaders Eat Last' during this challenge. I enjoyed Sinek's TED talk and his book 'Start with Why' (September's book) was one of the first LPD books I picked up.

In 1921, the armed forces would not be integrated for another 27 years. WAAC would not be actualized for 21, and American Women’s right to vote was recognized less that a year prior.
Every day I am excited to be in an Army in 2021. One that is committing itself to #PeopleFirst. Initiatives like #ProjectInclusion, #ThisIsMySquad, and #WhatsYourWarrior are making my Army a stronger, more cohesive, more capable #USArmy than ever before.
‘John Brown: A Biography of American abolitionist’ by W.E.B. Du Bois. A fascinating telling of the antebellum abolitionist whose belief -"Slavery is wrong"- thrust him and into a personal war to uproot an institution older than the nation he loved.

There is much more to this topic than we can cover in just two threads per week while still leaving time to cover all the other topics we’ll get to, but how about one more thread about Officer Education in the @USArmy during the Interwar Period?
As many people know, the Army is a lot more than just Infantry, Armor, and Artillery. And Army missions involve a lot more than just closing with and destroying the enemy. The things that officers learn in school help make sure the Army functions as a whole organization.

One of the most common anonymous posts I see in the military spouse FB groups is the reluctance of a spouse to seek mental health treatment because of fear it will hurt their SM’s career. Not only has the Army created an environment where SMs are afraid to 1/
seek help, it has also allowed this same fear to harm their families as well. Many spouses are afraid seeking help will limit their ability to PCS. I’ve seen posts where spouses have discussed whether or not they should take their medication and for how long if they are 2/
trying to go OCONUS. Horrifyingly, I’ve even seen discussion about whether or not having their children treated for something is a good idea based on it limiting where they can PCS. I’ve seen spouses worry about what their SM’s chain of command will think about them needing 3/

In order to remain a #PeopleFirst Army, we must be honest about our past, understanding and reckoning with moments that have held us back. Changing posts named for Confederate leaders, many who never served in the U.S. Army, is an important step. 1/
While we do this, we need to educate ourselves about why these names came to be in the first place, and why it matters in the 21st century. 2/
The Confederate names were products of the WWI and WWII mobilizations, which occurred in the Jim Crow era of white supremacy, racial violence, and disenfranchisement of Black people. 3/
To everybody thinking they have the right to correct #DisabledPeople when they use that term, telling us it should be #PWD STOP. #PeopleFirst is not correct, it's outdated. Maybe listen to us, explore the #SocialModel & be a bit more humble.
To all the people who didn't get what I meant in this tweet, here's my beginner's guide to disability explanation of language like disabled people.
If you are really tied to putting "people" first when describing disabled people, to stick to the social model & be grammatically correct why not use "people who are disabled" or "a person who is disabled"?

Scott Moe’s government has failed to support vulnerable students. I’ve heard from too many parents and teachers worried about how this pandemic is impacting their kids’ mental health. Young people have been through so much in the past months, and supports were already inadequate.
