On point 1: The Governor is the rhetorical political leader of the state. Like EF Hutton, when they talk, people listen. Whether or not they have actual power is beside the point to most citizens; people think the Gov is powerful, therefore (to some degree), they are.
In terms of partisanship, right now the country is divided 26 R Governors to 24 D. Sure they don’t vote together like a legislature, but each election takes on amped up importance because of the tight partisan balance. Map from governors.rutgers.edu/fast-facts-abo… 
Mark Robinson is just the North Carolina version of Doug Mastriano with a bit more $$. It’s absolutely defensible to start 2024 #NCGov as Lean D, especially given that Dems will run a popular statewide official like Josh Stein while Robinson is currently the clear GOP favorite.
Robinson’s win as LG in 2020 really wasn’t as impressive as people think. That office is extremely anonymous and it’s very hard to get anyone to know or care about it, especially a presidential year. Different story when you’re running for governor.

The irony of North Carolina redistricting is that the rules allow Republicans to draw a map like this were put in place by Democrats in attempt to gerrymander Republicans out of power.
The reason Gov Roy Cooper (D) can't veto the maps is because Democrats in 1996 took away the gubernatorial veto to prevent a Republican governor from vetoing their gerrymanders.
The Chief Justice of the North Carolina supreme Court who will pick the panel to decide any redistricting cases is a Republican because #NCGov Roy Cooper (D) politicize Court appointments and it backfired on him spectacularly.

Last week, hundreds of students whose parents fought, were injured or died in war were told NC Dept of Military & Veterans Affairs would cut room & board allowance in half. It still hasn't paid any scholarship $, despite promises to do so #ncpol #ncgov wbtv.com/2019/12/05/chi…
As a result of the cut--which wasn't announced until last week--schools are now demanding students re-pay money that had already been credited towards their account. Students/parents are dealing with this uncertainty during finals and as the holidays approach #ncpol #ncgov

So this is pretty weird. McCrory won Bladen County 52%-46%. But he lost absentee by-mail in Bladen 61%-38%. The only voting method he lost in the county. McCrory also won statewide absentee by-mail voting in 2016. Hmm. 🤔 Seems like more ?s to be asked. #NC09 #NCPOL
