WHY DO kids bother with college, the vast majority who go?
If not STEM--and even that's being infiltrated by Lefty zombies--what's the degree worth?

Back in the day when I was reading Dykes to Watch Out For & Hothead Paisan, I encountered the term “Stone Butch” which seemed to better encapsulate how I experienced love & affection for people but rarely any desire for them to get sexy with me (asexual wasn’t widely used)
I was sorting out my orientation in the 1990s & had been given virtually no healthy tools to do so
We didn’t have many terms for that complex trifecta of sex/gender/orientation better understood now
Also, AIDS was a thing & alternative sexuality carried enormous stigma

The discussion on #intersex rights for too long has been built off a medical narrative that defines intersex pp who truly biologically are between sexes in a distinct way. In truth if the POINT of our activism is to protect the autonomy & humanity of people, then (1)
We must instead focus on “Interphobia” and who are at risk from it. That includes a larger definition on intersex- like #hypo guys who are needlessly operated on often to negative results from a fear of their slightly different bodies.(2) #intersex
The problem is more and more hospitals are boldly claiming they are ending their forced #intersex surgeries on kids, while in reality most of those surgeries they are still performing. Not because of medical need, but fear of those whose bodies are SEEN as “between” (3)

So today @niassembly had the 2nd reading of the #periodpoverty bill. During which we learned @JimAllister has done enough research to quote @Docstockk while @PaulaJaneB said many trans people were severely mentally ill and @SineadBradleySD used #intersex people as a gotcha.

Intersex people like me are born outside of binary gender. There is a wide range of how that presents, but we are neither male nor female by traditional definitions - down to our very biology.

3 years ago @HRW published our first ever report investigating and exposing the human rights violations against children born with #intersex traits -- we spoke with intersex kids and adults, their parents, and doctors in charge of their care: hrw.org/report/2017/07…

Ok, so having had time to watch and reflect on the #callthemidwife episode featuring an #intersex character, here are my thoughts: (1/15)
Firstly this was really hard to watch. I cried as Lois was intimately examined in front of a host of strange men. This was a pretty accurate reflection of my experiences as a teen. (2/15)
I lost count of the number of times that numerous students were “coincidentally” present when I needed an intimate exam. (3/15)
Preface: everyone is different, this is of course one opinion. Also, while they are common themes among intersex people, medical trauma, non-consensual surgeries, or even a diagnosis are not requirements to ID as intersex, and we don't endorse gatekeeping.
What is or is not intersex is somewhat subjective. At its simplest, IDing as #intersex is about having experiences with your body's inherent sex differences, and if that word feels right to you.
As an intersex AND queer person: it takes deliberation to talk about #intersex issues in a way that does not risk inadvertently throwing LGBTQ+ people, esp trans people, under the bus. We have a responsibility to calculate every word, esp "biological"... #thread
btw yes, I AM of the opinion that "I" firmly belongs in the LGBT+ acronym. Intersex medicalization born from homophobia shows parallels: intersex ppl falling on a spectrum of sex face violence & erasure for the same reasons as ppl who fall along a spectrum of gender, sexuality.
As #intersex knowledge slowly becomes more and more mainstream, I become more and more cautious about the language we move toward and away from. We must be deliberate so as not to exacerbate common arguments against our LGB and trans peers.

Contrary to popular belief, there really are more than two genders.Many people with sex chromosome variations don't know they have it, or find out later in life. Some are born with ambiguous genitals, and some look like one gender or another but their chromosomes are different.
