This TxDOT video is probably the quickest way to visualize what their plans are. Basically:
- One HOV lane in each direction
- Reconstruct six bridges at Grand Avenue, Howard, Rundburg, Braker, Wells Branch Parkway and frontage road bridge over Walnut Creek
Wells Branch Parkway bridge will actually be converted to a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). You may have already seen the DDI at Parmer Lane that opened in 2021. kut.org/transportation… Image

At today's SANDAG Transportation Committee we had a discussion on individuals preference to widen freeways. I understand the desire to reduce congestion BUT it is important to note what has been learned and how widening freeways can actually INCREASE congestion. #InducedDemand
To get an understanding of the potential negative impacts of freeway expansions can do we can look at the I-10 “Katy Freeway” expansion in the Houston metro area. One of the widest freeways in the world. It was widened to a whopping 26 lanes at a cost of almost 3 billion dollars.
All of this was done with the goal that the freeway expansion would alleviate traffic congestion. After widened, congestion got worse. Houston’s traffic monitoring agency noticed a 30% increase and 55% during the evening commute between 2011 and 2014. It was an expensive failure.

If your goal in building freeways & widening roads is to “solve congestion,” you’ll always fail. If your actual goal is to get more driving, & more sprawl, you’ll always succeed.

Since I’m asked this CONSTANTLY, once & for all, if your city-region is REALLY concerned about “solving car congestion,” u need a combination of smart land-use, inviting walking/biking/transit infrastructure, & a pricing mechanism for driving high enough to get people to change.
“We found that there’s this perfect one-to-one relationship. If a city increased its road capacity by 10%, then the amount of driving in that city went up by 10%.” One of the best articles on why building bigger roads just leads to more driving. V/@WIRED wired.com/2014/06/wuwt-t…

It’s actually remarkable that we still fall for the sales pitch that cars equal freedom. There’s nothing free about the lack of choice that comes from car dependancy. And building our city-regions around cars is the most costly thing we can do. Does that sound “free” to you?

It’s that time again. Thanksgiving traffic in the United States reminds us that we’re not stuck in traffic — we are traffic. And the only thing we’re really stuck in is the belief that we can’t make different choices. Via @DanLinden @abcnews
