The ancient kingdom of Israel was demolished. They don't have any right to claim it. In 70 ad, when Titus the Great from Rome demolished their Second Temple, the Jews was banished from Jerusalem by the Rome, the Authority there.
Then, the Jews didn't permitted to enter the Old City of Jerusalem except on Bav Tisha eve. Without their temple, Jews lost their guidance. They change their way to sacrifice and their way in religion.
