Real reasons for #conflict are buried in history & intermittently ooze out like hot lava from fissures. #Europe's been an active conflict zone for long born out of a stiff #RomanHangover ever since the #Empire collapsed.#Theopolitics is 1 ingredient in its conflict cocktail

Conflict in #Europe has to be understood in that context before jumping in & taking sides. Colonial times afforded no option & the world got involved twice converting #EuropeanConflict's into #WorldWar's. Many unconcerned died. India lost many braves from #Gallipoli to #Siam

#Ukraine is the latest in a tiring list & has many players beyond just army & politicians. Eastern Orthodox Church, Greek Catholic Church, Patriarchies of Moscow, Constantinople & Kyiv & that west & east of #Dnieper think differently.. all making up the hidden factors

Day 9 of #TurkeyJewishRoadtrip:

Ayvalık/Troy/Çanakkale/Dardanelles Strait

Waking tp to the view of the Agean sea and #Cunda was quite amazing - not to say pretty relaxing... We are going to Çanakkale!
Last night me and Chaim were walking in Ayvalık - a coffee shop owner noticing the Kipah on Chaim's head walks over:

- "Are you guys Jewish by any chance?" - "Of course!" we say.
- "Let's have coffee, its on me. Last year I got stuck in Israel for 8 months during the pandemic."
He was excited to see Jews walking on the streets of his hometown, and is planning on opening an identical coffee shop in Tel Aviv...

Leave a comment if you prefer the Sunset over Sunrise...

Back to Çanakkale...

A stonemason’s war:
🧵1/20
In 1915 Joseph Ellis was a stonemason in the quiet, ex-goldfield town of Castlemaine, Victoria.
Two of his sons worked in the small family business:
William, stonemason, was 23, 170cm tall, fair-haired & blue-eyed.
Samuel was 21, with dark complexion.

With little work available, the brothers enlisted together in March 1915 in the Australian Imperial Force.
Pay was good: 6 shillings/day.
In contrast, British Army private soldiers received 1 shilling per day.
Recruits arrive at Broadmeadows Camp, west of Melbourne in 1915.

William and Samuel Ellis were both attached to the new 21st Battalion, New Zealand & Australian Division. Five weeks later the Ellis brothers were aboard the Transport A38 (the “Ulysses”), bound for Egypt.
They trained hard for several weeks in the desert, near the pyramids.

Happy Monday - it turns out, there are numerous excellent photographs of people drinking tea in the @I_W_M collection. I'll share just a few of them below 👇🏼

I’m an avid history geek 🤓 and I got this idea from @GippersChutzpah!
My follower count is currently stuck in the mid ages. I’ll tweet some Jewish history milestones from along the years, according to my follower count. So come on, I’m 4 followers short of the first story...
On 13/12/1204, Moshe Ben Maimon AKA #Maimonides (Greek) and Ha’Rambam (Hebrew), died at 69 in Egypt.
A Philosopher, Physician, Astronomer and one of most important #Jewish Scholars of all times.
Buried in Tiberias @Israel, upon final request to be buried in the ancient homeland
WOW! 3 followers away from yet another milestone of #JewishHistory!
So far we learned about some pogroms 😠(1171 France, 1190 England) and Maïmōnídēs dying 😢(1204 Egypt).
JewishHistory is filled with sorrow and darkness but it gets better in the 2nd half of the 20th century 😉
