- le vaccin inactivé (injectable) qui protège contre le risque de polio grave mais pas contre la transmission du virus par les intestins;
- le vaccin vivant attenué (oral) qui protège à la fois de la transmission et des formes graves.

As GN bacteria go, it's an interesting bug:
Highly motile, curved, GNR, #Urease-positive, catalase-positive, oxidase-positive
Related to Campylobacter, for family fun
Nice crossover with our #Gastroenterology colleagues, eh #IDtwitter and @IDSAInfo

The Zero COVID strategy is gaining ground, with countries like New Zealand standing out for their success in dealing with the epidemic. Here are some observations on why and how this strategy works. A thread. #EconTwitter #EpiTwitter #eradication #ZeroCovid
The main ideas are borrowed from previous work I've done in slightly different context, looking at how disease control with multiple policies should be designed. There I looked at treatment and prevention, but ideas similar.

Suppose we want to control disease and have two broad policy instruments available, lockdowns and test-trace-isolate (TTI). Each policy is costly, so we need to understand how to use and combine them wisely at different phases of epidemic.

I guess I better speak out on my own thread. @GRamsey_LatAm is gushing over how PAHO/WHO are "intervening" in the disastrous Venezuelan health situation.

Dude: I have been watching #measles and #malaria case numbers here in South America for the past few years.

1/5.
The deterioration of the health situation in South America is glaringly evident.

A couple of years ago, I watched #malaria case numbers climb over 240,000 in Venezuela, after having been much lower than that for years, and almost eradicated in the 1950s and 1960s.

Soon thereafter, I personally witnessed the #migration out of #Venezuela , which had once been the most prosperous South American nation.

I saw some people so thin they could have been in the horrors of WW2.

#FunFactFriday on #biocontrol: We focus on finding new #invasivespecies & preventing introductions b/c #eradication, especially in the ocean, is hard. Removing small animals by hand is almost always impossible, so sci's must use a mechanical, chemical, or biological solution. 🔎
Introducing known predators of invasives is an effort called "biocontrol" but sometimes these predators don't follow orders. Check out this @SmithsonianMag article about a wasp that *might* save Florida oranges! goo.gl/EnEchH
A well known biocontrol failure is the introduction of the South Am. Cane Toad to AUS 🇦🇺. It was brought to eat an insect pest but the toad didn't like the habitat of the pest & moved quickly to a new area, where its population exploded - a problem since cane toads are poisonous!
