In 1953 the North Sea flood caused a flood of massive proportions, flooding large regions of the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. The Netherlands was affected the most, having a death toll over 1800 people. /2
After 1953, the Dutch have greatly reduced their vulnerability by investing in protective infrastructure. They were able to afford this expensive infrastructure, because they became wealthier. This was called the Delta programme and it protects them against exceptional floods. /3

Loving #solarpunk. In sync with #ecomodernism but different roots, visions. Been hoping for something like this. On sea level, e.g., given j.mp/climatemomentum, *someone* has to get juiced about designing for a future with no new "normal" coastline & #deepuncertainty. 1/3
There were hints of #solarpunk in the young MIT #oceanengineering crew at the @UNHABITAT #floatingcities special meeting, but really just beginnings. j.mp/ngfloatingciti….. But.. 2/3
I think there are also hints of #solarpunk in the #farmhack community I first encountered years ago at @StoneBarns: dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/12/04/on-… And via @Rainmaker1973 here: 3/3

And I was most interested in what it had to say about the legacy of colonialism and slavery, globalism and international responsibility, the refugee crisis, and race.
