1/11 This @CTW_ATC discussion outlines my book on how the Western intelligentsia of the global theory industry has helped consolidate the "compatible" Left (i.e. compatible w capitalism & imperialism). 🧵

3/ I've provided detailed scholarly accounts of #Derrida's idealist misreadings of philosophic history in these two books, which demonstrate that even his 'internal analyses' leave much to be desired:

Parker Jay-Pachirat @parkerjayp, a VC at Fintech Collective @fintech_io was recently interviewed by @BanklessHQ about #criticaltheory in the context of blockchain innovations.

We listened to the entire podcast to provide you with a summary of the important insights

🧵👇
1/ @parkerjayp has a unique take on systems and power structures at a broad scale

She argues that power exists in any context

Some forms of power are explicit and some are inexplicit

It’s very reminiscent of @jordanbpeterson's idea of hierarchies existing everywhere

western academia projects like #Decoloniality are rooted in materialism, focus on outer transformation.

Dharmic movements reject sacred v secular partition. Outer progress reflects inner transformation via embodied knowing.

In the last few months, many prominent evangelical leaders have warned about #CriticalTheory in its various forms. Here's a short thread collecting the statements of Carl Ellis Jr., Tim Keller, Carl Trueman, John Piper, JD Greear, and Anthony Bradley: 1/
Carl Ellis Jr. writes: "my worldview is solely derived from the Scriptures. I therefore reject Critical Theory, Critical Race Theory (CRT), today’s Intersectionality..as well as Marxism and all its applications, as antithetical to..the Gospel of Christ" 2/
drcarlellisjr.blogspot.com/2020/02/seven-…
Tim Keller writes that "postmodern critical theory" is: “deeply incoherent,” “far too simplistic,” “undermining [of] our common humanity,” “[denying] our common sinfulness,” and “mak[ing] forgiveness, peace, and reconciliation between groups impossible” 3/

Ten Shades of the Far-Left, prt 1: Universities.
Today no American college graduate goes thru his university years without coming face to face with #CriticalTheory and the postmodern – aka #CulturalMarxism. (THREAD)

#CriticalTheory arrived in the USA when the #Marxist professors of the Institute of Sociology of Frankfurt were forced to flee Nazi Germany. They brought with themselves the barely disguised ambition to bring down the democratic order based on capitalism.
They believed that “In the new order, Socialism will triumph by first capturing the culture via infiltration of schools, universities, churches, and the media by transforming the consciousness of society.” (Antonio Gramsci)

In the introduction to our multi-part series on the ideological background of the postmodern revolution that has gripped the USA, my esteemed collegue

and I identify #CulturalMarxism as the core of the problem. (THREAD)

The series is titled "Ten Shades of the Far-Left" because we examine 10 levels of American society that Cultural Marxism has infiltrated and where it has caused great damage by undermining the pillars of American society...
We define Cultural Marxism as an amalgamation of the neomarxist #CriticalTheory first proposed by the Frankfurt School and the postmodern philosophies that aim to deconstruct all barriers to selfish wish fulfillment - be it social, institutional, legal or natural...

I mean this non-pejoratively, but #CriticalTheory is a conspiracy theory without conspirators.

Short thread:
Conspiracy theories argue that the overall trajectory of history and the majority of people's actions are shaped by a powerful, nefarious cabal of conspirators, whose 1/
existence can only be inferred by recognizing subtle, insidious connections between public facts which can be discerned only by people who have gotten "woke".

This is precisely the same argument that critical theorists make, except that the nefarious cabal of conspirators 2/
is replaced by nefarious social forces and hegemonic narratives. No one is intentionally pulling the strings, but we're all nonetheless being controlled. And most people remain in denial and are unable to see the truth until they're enlightened, not by internet forums and 3/

It's important for Christians to recognize how 'oppression' has been redefined by #CriticalTheory :

"We do not use traditional or popular meanings of oppression (such as a ruler's tyrannical rule or a nation's conquest and colonial domination of other peoples)... 1/
Oppression is 'structural' and 'systemic,' and usually operates under the radar because it is part of an unequal society's 'unquestioned norms, habits, and symbols'; its 'normal processes of everyday life'; 2/
and its 'assumptions underlying institutional rules and the collective consequences of following those rules'" - Adams' Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice, p. 247 3/3

OK, I've reached my limit — I can't take it anymore. Here comes a rant about how it seems like everyone in the USA is getting "post-modernism" wrong.

Context: I'm listening to Philosophy Talk's episode "Is Postmodernism Really to Blame for Post-Truth?" 1/ philosophytalk.org/shows/postmode…
2/ First, on the term itself. "Postmodernism" can mean so many different things — from specific movements in art, architecture & literature to an entire socio-cultural era — and yet it has become the term for a punching bag filled with a variety of misunderstandings.
3/ I can't bring myself to continue this "PoMo" misnomering. It just confuses everything. So I'm going to call it "critical theory" or CT for lack of a better term.

1 might also ID it as the post-structuralist tradition of investigating the relations between power & knowledge.

On #CriticalTheory

On this day some eat turkey, I read dry scholarship on #liberalism and #postmodernism. Oh, yeah. And I eat turkey, too.
I’ve seen a number of debates — some quite heated! — going back and forth about the validity, soundness, and compatibility of #Islam with #criticaltheory scholarship. Some advocate that it’s entirely incompatible with so-called traditional Islamic thought.
I for one do not subscribe to this on a metaphysical level (as some advocate) though I do find several problems with its claims when taken too far or its scoped expanded too wide. In fact, I think a thing — or a philosophy — is not so much incompatible with Islam
