Please try to understand the difficulties people face when they run in social circles and/or have extended families that have all moved on from the pandemic... except for them.

It's a lonely and confusing place.

#covid19bc
There is a weird liminal space we live in -- a dissonance-- where we know the science & we can see what's happening in the news...

and yet, we look around us & see that we are the only ones still being vigilant. It makes us ask ourselves if we are somehow being unreasonable? /2
This may not be the case with you, personally, but it certainly the case with me. Maybe it's because I'm deeply extroverted & I have a rather large social network.

But I'm struggling with the dissonance of it all & I'm putting it out there in case you feel the same way. /3

A @WorkSafeBC #covid19bc claim must demonstrate higher exposure at work vs daily life so you must list exposures from: gym, worship, friends &family. Effectively, by removing #maskmandate , #PHO has undermined *every* WS claim unless we forego ALL socials outside of work 1/
@WorkSafeBC ....Effectively a claim can be denied due to Public health removing public protections &workers who have ANY social life, who does not receive *meds* (paxlovid? few workers eligible) & who does not personally mask up consistently...oh AND family members 2/
@WorkSafeBC But note, this claim form is also telling us that sports, gyms & workplaces where non household people gather socially ( where? like restaurants? pubs?) are full of #covid19bc & you,the worker must show that you take precautions in that social realm ...reposting image 3/ worksafe screening questionnaire from https://www.worksafe

Went to Burnaby Hospital with small #corsirosenthalbox No questions asked. The DIY cover/carry bag with handles hid filter pleats. Likely why no stares at it. RockSolar power bank kept it running as I carried 13x13x20 unit. Also had portable rechargeable slung over shoulder neck.

I found the RockSolar power station used. Delivery from Amazon is not quick. Whole set up was light/easy to carry. CO2 was excellent in hospital, but was happy to have the air filtration. Small #corsirosenthal is 13x13x20. Forgot to put shroud on this one. Oops.
Made the cover/carry ‘bag’ for small CR with washable polypropylene on bottom & for straps. Stretchy mesh fabric on the sides lets air thru. Have purchased 3 types mesh. This mesh from Etsy is best: 2way stretch/doesn’t run. Delivery faster than expected etsy.com/ca/listing/694…

#NEW: Independent review of BC's COVID-19 response highlights several points that need improvement including pandemic planning, health data collection, and very clearly, transparency and an explanation for public health decisions.

#COVID19BC @CapitalDailyVic
@CapitalDailyVic I'm still going through the 150-page report, and will tweet updates from the press conference with Mike Farnworth in this thread.

Full report: www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/pub…

#bcpoli
Interesting point: Up top, the report says BC's response to the pandemic was "strong, showing resilience, balance, and nimbleness."

On page 50: "In our survey, less than 20 percent
agreed government had done a good job."

The report is informed by 15,000 survey responses.

The BC public should demand that @BCNDP #BringBackMasks!

#Thread: @adriandix and PHO Bonnie Henry starting their presser

Dix: Need to "wear a mask if we have mild symptoms & considering wearing a mask in indoor public spaces...most importantly staying home when we're sick and...washing our hands frequently with soap & water.
@adriandix DBH: "The three main viruses we need to pay attention to...are now COVID-19...influenza and RSV"

Says ~51% of eligible children have had their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

About 90% of BCians have some immunity from COVID-19 through vax and prior infection.

@CapitalDailyVic
DBH: As a result of protection from vax and prior infection, "Most people in BC are no longer at risk of severe illness and hospitalization even in long term care, even people who are immune compromised."
Says hospitalization/death from COVID has started to drop in last few weeks

Today I asked @AdrianDix to explain how we can trust his or the PHO’s word after this @CapitalDailyVic & @bbybeacon story.

BCers have been misled about #COVID19 transmissions in schools.

There needs to be accountability. 1/ #bcpoli #bced #COVID19BC
capitaldaily.ca/news/henry-sta…
Before a press conference in 2020, Dr Henry wrote to staff “We need to be able to give some data that supports what we keep saying - transmission in schools is low,” 2/ #bcpoli #bced #COVID19BC
The PHO and this government were trying to find data to support the narrative that Covid was not spreading among children in schools.

At the same time as telling teachers and parents that the reality they were experiencing was false. 3/ #bcpoli #bced #COVID19BC

Yet another disturbing report on BC’s handling of #COVID19.

"During what officials called a ‘daunting’ spike in school exposures, the PHO maintained that spring break drove infections, not in-school transmission."

1/ #bcpoli #bced #COVID19BC
capitaldaily.ca/news/henry-sta…
Lack of transparency, inaccessible data, misleading information, downplaying risks - these have been trends we have seen over and over again.

In fact studies found "BC’s COVID death toll could be double what was reported"

#NEW: BC is preparing for a surge in COVID-19 and influenza-related hospitalizations expected starting mid-November.

They project 700 COVID patients needing hospitalization at a time (currently ~350), plus a peak of up to 1,200 influenza patients.

@CapitalDailyVic #covid19bc
@CapitalDailyVic Steps being considered:

- Adding 1,500 hospital beds (to current 9,400 capacity)
-Moving patients to community and LTC care
- 'Bed management teams' at hospitals
-Worst case scenario: postponing surgeries

Dr. Bonnie Henry says it's important to protect against respiratory illnesses like COVID-19 but also important to "come back together". Says COVID measures had differential impacts on racialized populations, young people, etc.

The government has a responsibility to inform, educate and support the public.

Today’s presser is yet another example of the @bcndp sending mixed messages about #COVID19. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC
They continue to send mixed messages about the risks and impacts of #COVID19, telling the public that it is a ‘mild disease’ and that ‘we are emerging from the pandemic'.

We know this pandemic is not over. COVID continues to impact our health and well-being and the economy. 2/

#NEW: Omicron's newest subvariants are already here and spreading fast, with their ability to bypass antibodies from both vaccines and prior infection, says new data from BC + experts.

What it means for our healthcare system this summer:
#bcpoli capitaldaily.ca/news/summer-wa…
“We are all incredibly worried that there will be more morbidity and mortality," said ER physician Dr. Jeff Unger.

Last week, Saanich Peninsula Hospital asked Island Health to shut down the ER overnight, to redirect staff to their busiest hours.

Island Health said no.
With public health measures all but gone & waning immunity from 3rd doses, BA.4 and BA.5 are expected soon become dominant in BC.

A new study shows that the more times you get reinfected with COVID-19, the higher your risk of death, hospitalization, and long COVID.

I had a chance to go to this @VSOrchestra Orpheum Theatre built after the Spanish Flu to be *pandemic proof* and WOW. This ventilating system is FULLY OPERATIONAL. Huge crowd 1/n Image
@VSOrchestra And under the seats there were these mushroom shaped objects...Fresh air from pipes provided a very gentle stream of air & note these air intakes were protected by the mushroom design. the stem emitted air, the umbrella part protected it 2/n ImageImage

COVID-in-wastewater for BC Lower Mainland, to 4-June-2022. 🪡
From bccdc.ca/Health-Info-Si…
Red line at zero level added to emphasize that relatively high levels persist in wastewater, discordant with the low level of officially reported cases. (1/n)
#covid19bc Image
The graph is dominated by the Jan-Dec peak, which effectively and conveniently scales down the current persistent high levels. The eye tends not to catch that the levels post-peak are much higher than the levels before. (2/n) Image
The description in the text seems determined to ignore these persistent high levels, and appears to focus on shorter-term bumps and noise in order to use the word “decreased”… (3/n) Image

Alarming/worrisome trend in BC, Canada.
New cases are 1/20 of the Jan/Feb peak.
👉Yet avg daily deaths are near that peak
👉The 14% unvax now represent new low of only 7% of daily deaths
👉The 51% triple vax are 76% of daily deaths, a new high
🤦‍♂️Media is silent.
1/4 #covid19bc
2/4 Despite new cases at 1/20 those in February, daily deaths are back up to the February highs of the Omicron wave, around 11 per day.
BC media and Bonnie Henry have gone to a quiet, weekly reporting only now. They no longer point out the vaccination status of the deceased.
3/4 Unvaccinated are 14% of the population (unchanged in months), but the vaccinated have hit a new high of 93% of daily deaths. Shouldn't the vaccinated be more protected from dying? And the numbers only go up every week.

Let’s talk about union advocacy & politics.

How much does the government party-in-power affect unions? Turns out, a lot.
Case in point, Ontario Fed of Labour vs. BC Fed of Labour, on #COVID19. @OFLabour @bcfed

Worker safety ought to be forefront. Let’s see…

A thread🧵
#bcpoli
2/ Ontario Fed of Labour has researched & advocated for #COVIDisAirborne policies for workers for 2 years now.

Check out their website. Posted in early June, 2021!

“Follow the science. Enforce the law. Protect workers.”

3/ More from @OFLabour on #COVIDisAirborne safety:

06/21“But it’s not about, ‘We told you so’. It’s about, we told you to protect workers from potential airborne transmission of COVID-19. Why haven’t you listened to so many voices, including the labour movement for over a yr?”

Healthcare workers say #COVID19 hospitalizations on the rise + surgeries being postponed

@CapitalDailyVic “I am writing to let you all know that we are facing an extreme overcensus situation at all of our acute care sites,” reads the email which was sent to staff at Victoria General Hospital, and shared with @zoeducklow

#COVID19BC
According to ER physician Dr. Jeff Unger, all 3 ERs (RJH, VGH, Saan Pen) were full on Sunday and RJH was on ambulance diversion for a part of the night.

A nurse at RJH tells us surgeries are being postponed because there are too many COVID patients in surgical units.

In what was their final #COVID19 briefing for the foreseeable future our PHO and government have failed to educate British Columbians on the risks of #LongCOVID, of the airborne spread of this virus, and of the benefits of well-fitting & high-quality masks. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC
This is a failure to provide essential information to the public, at a time when this government has transferred all responsibility to individuals to try to keep themselves and others safe from #COVID19 infection. 2/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC
In P.E.I & Quebec mask mandates have been extended until the end of the month in order to manage rising cases. It’s clear that the B.A.2 variant has taken over in BC, and yet we continue to act as though we're somehow going to avoid the impacts we’re seeing elsewhere. 3/ #bcpoli

Today I asked Premier @jjhorgan what, in a pandemic, his government owes to the people and those who live with them who are medically vulnerable or immunocompromised? The Minister of Health answered instead. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC #COVID19
I ask this because @humanrights4bc sent a letter to the PHO arguing that the mask mandate should remain.

The letter states, “Lifting the mask mandate will do disproportionate harm to those who are already marginalized”. 2/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC bchumanrights.ca/wp-content/upl…
.@jjhorgan has tasked his gov't with tackling systemic discrimination – it is in the mandate letter of the Minister of Health.
And yet, our Human Rights Commissioner said that the sudden removal of the mask mandate will have profound effects on vulnerable people in BC. 3/ #bpcoli
