Wie kann BioNTech sicher sein, dass der #Impfstoff auch gegen neue Varianten des #Corinavirus wirkt? Und warum können wir nicht einfach die #Impfstoff-Produktion erhöhen? Coronaviren haben typischerweise Spike-Proteine, mit denen sie sich an Wirtszellen heften.
Der Vergleich von Gen- und Aminosäuresequenzen des neuen #Coronavirus mit bekannten Coronaviren kann Anhaltspunkte liefern, welche Aminosäuren für eine korrekte Faltung und damit die Funktion unbedingt notwendig sind. Das muss man natürlich noch auf andere Weise überprüfen.
Das Immunsystem reagiert auf die Spike-Proteine mit einer Immunantwort, d.h. der Bildung zahlloser Antikörper, die sich auch gegen nicht unbedingt notwendige Regionen richten. Bis genug wirksame Antikörper gegen das Spike-Protein entstehen, dauert es bis zu zwei Wochen.
