Today's #MunicipalistMonday highlights community owned energy in Scotland's north/west isles. Renewables are powering communities through democratic & collective ownership, with some parallels to remunicipalisation elsewhere.
This is also an example of redistributing land & revitalising rural communities: Scotland has very concentrated land ownership due to a history of enclosure & clearance. Few absentee landlord families own most of Scotland.
However, in the last 20 years, rural communities have collectively bought their lands. Building community-owned renewables has often financed these projects.
What does "community" mean in energy systems? Our new #openaccess paper (bit.ly/30JTU0e) provides conceptual clarity through a systematic review of 405 papers and an analysis of 183 definitions. Here are our main findings! ⬇️(THREAD) #CommunityEnergy #renewableenergy 
1. Despite a multiplicity of concepts referring to community-based initiatives in energy systems (community solar, community wind, renewable energy community etc.), “community energy” and “energy community” have become predominant in the literature.
2. There are striking variations in the meanings attached to the notion of community and the alleged objectives pursued by communities across concepts and over time.

2. @Ecopower_BE is a renewable energy cooperative from Belgium. It was founded in the 1980s, when a group of friends converted an old water mill to create renewable energy
3. Today @Ecopower_BE powers more than 50,000 homes with 100% renewable energy.
