...Of course, one of the agonies of people caught up in this crisis is that they often can't sell their flat because the banks won't lend a mortgage to a prospective buyer of a property of potentially zero value.

The terrible situation STILL faced by victims of the #cladding scandal demonstrates the outrageous nature of limited liability. Limited liability is a free gift to corporations. It allows them to walk away, leaving others to pick up the bill.

Limited liability should be a commercial product, purchased by limited companies from insurers, who can assess the nature and scale of the risk, and charge accordingly.
This would elimate at a stroke a large part of the externality problem.

Why is this subject so seldom raised? One scandal after another reveals the cost that the current nature of limited liability transfers either to victims of corporate corner-cutting, or to taxpayers, who have to pick up the pieces.

The #CladdingScandal is a story of broken Tory promises, pushing thousands into financial hardship and paralysing part of the housing market. As the #FireSafetyBill comes back to the Commons, here is a refresher of just a few of the government's broken promises so far (THREAD).
Why does this matter? There are hundreds of thousands of leaseholders in the UK still living in buildings with unsafe cladding and other fire safety issues, almost four years after the Grenfell Tower disaster.
Today, MPs will vote on an amendment which would legally protect leaseholders from the costs of a problem they did not cause. Legal protection is extremely important - on the evidence below, it is clear leaseholders need more than Tory promises.
1/7 The Government’s handling of the cladding crisis has lacked any sense of grip or urgency. We have deep concerns that people are being put at risk, trapped in flammable buildings for a third lockdown, with leaseholders placed in an impossible position.

2/7 Ministers promised over15 times that cladding costs wouldn't be passed on to leaseholders, but have broken their promises. Labour has tabled more amendments to the #FireSafetyBill to lock into law the principle that leaseholders are protected from unfair fire safety costs.
3/7 Labour is supportive of other amendments which help achieve this goal. The amendment tabled by McPartland and Smith provides welcome clarity on the specific costs that would be prevented from being passed on to leaseholders, but Labour has sought to go further.

Over the years it has become clear that this home is badly constructed from the core. There are construction defects with balconies, leaking windows and faulty communal boiler system. I have had to endure 7 winters of intermittent or no hot water.

The estate is not maintained by @Brent_Council’s partner @LQHomesMatter. Dead landscaping. Dirty grounds and interiors. Failing heating system. Breaking communal doors.

Hearing extraordinary stories from residents: builders and developers have folded, insurers are either increasing premiums or dropping policies, residents are feeling pressured. Very few buildings fixed.
