#EXCLUSIVE: On cutting agricultural emissions, the Liberal government considered following in the footsteps of the European Union which has required member states to cut fertilizer use by 20% and reduce farmland by 10%. #cdnpol
tnc.news/2023/02/01/ott…
Europe's "Farm to Fork Strategy" recently prompted the Dutch government's ambitious plan to cut nitrogen emission by a whopping 50$ via a €7.5 billion farm buyout scheme.

The move has led to widespread protests, tractor convoys and farmers clashing with authorities.
A copy of a speech delivered by Agriculture Minister Marie Claude-Bibeau to European counterparts described Canada’s emission reduction measures as “very closely aligned with the fertilizer reduction target in the EU’s Farm to Fork strategy.”

#EXCLUSIVE: Ottawa admitted in internal discussions that the 30% fertilizer emission reduction target would unfairly target western Canadian farmers and in turn cause Canada's agricultural yields to plummet. #cdnpol

tnc.news/2023/01/31/har…
A "science-based" assessment by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada clearly found that reducing nitrogen emissions for Alberta and Prairie farmers was likely not possible "without impacting yields."
Considering the fact that western provinces account for over 90% of Canada’s canola, spring wheat and barley crops, any slight reduction could upend exports and food supply at a national level.

#EXCLUSIVE: Federal documents obtained by @TrueNorthCentre show that Ottawa has considered forcing a carbon tax-like "regulatory backstop" onto farmers should voluntary agreements to reduce fertilizer emissions not meet the 30% reduction target. #cdnpol
tnc.news/2023/01/30/con…
An internal Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada policy discussion paper recommends giving consideration to a "regulatory backstop should voluntary approaches not be successful." When the federal carbon tax was introduced it was also described as a "regulatory backstop."
Farmers have expressed concerns about not being able to accurately measure fertilizer emissions.

“Estimates are based on experiments (small plots, research conditions) and may not be realized in every region or every condition at real scale,” wrote Agriculture Canada.

Hi everyone! I'm going to start a new thread as the day goes on - heres what happened last night until approximately 2:00AM /1
It's definitely a stand off now, with the line of police officers facing what seems like a pretty committed group of people - hearing reports that people have brought there children back to #AmbassadorBridge - there are snipers on roofs /2

Three things about the Canadian Coalition for ‘Firearm Rights’.
1. They work hard to present as mild-mannered target shooters, hunters and farmers. The reality is they want US-style gun policies for Canada: open carry in rural areas and concealed carry in our cities, plus …
broad rights of self defence with guns - recall that’s what enabled the Rittenhouse creature to secure his recent acquittal.
2. While the CCFR and their members cry ‘freedom’, it’s a particular kind of 🇺🇸 Second Amendment freedom, all focussed on their munitions.
By contrast, they have merely a nodding acquaintance with such things as freedom of expression.

I know many hearts and minds across our country have been focused on the tragedy unfolding in Nova Scotia. We stand together with the people of that province in their time of grief.
This has also been a day when MPs returned to Parliament to debate and eventually decide on a mix of in-person and virtual sittings...
This is important because some of the most important next steps the government must take will be focused on the best timing and the best ways to get the Canadian economy going again, which, in turn, involves us resuming, if only partially, our lives pre-March

Time for me to ask a really awkward question (and likely one that will get me roasted here) but here it goes: is it possible that #Alberta is taken for granted in federal politics because we are almost always a guaranteed conservative vote? Let me explain. #cdnpoli
I said it during the last federal election: the CPC could run a cactus here & it would likely get voted in. Conservative candidates didn't have to campaign here because they didn't have to earn anything. Trudeau barely visited because it was ROI-negative to come here. #cdnpoli
The other parties are essentially an afterthought here (sorry but it is true). The Conservative blue vote is so engrained here that it is working against us. Even when we had "our party" in power, they didn't have to work for Alberta. They had nothing to prove because "we won."

#YellowVestsCanada members are upset that they can't share the video of the #NewZealandTerroristAttack, so much so that it's a government conspiracy to protect the videos credibility.
@facebook allows this.

More comments. The black rectangles are blocking still captures of the video. You bet your ass I reported that.
These comments stuck out for me as particularly gross and heinous, so I looked into them a little further:

My usually-accurate friend @VassyKapelos mentioned today, in the course of a thoughtful @PnPCBC interview with Ontario Minister @GregRickford regarding Bill C-69 that “it’s not like pipelines were getting built, nor were they under the last government...”
#cdnpol 1/x
The statement was promptly corrected by both Minister and host, narrowing the reference to pipelines “to tidewater”. But as this comment is often heard (and a pet peeve for those of us who work on such projects), perhaps some data would be appreciated all round.

In 2005, just before PM @StephenHarper took office, Canadian oil exports to USA averaged 1.6 million barrels a day.
In 2015, his last year in office, 🇨🇦 oil exports to 🇺🇸 averaged 3.2 million barrels a day.
In other words, they DOUBLED during his tenure.

What's clear to me is that the NEB has denied this motion because the Trudeau government specifically excluded climate change impacts from a full review of this pipeline. Thread 1/
They say they are climate champions but they won't review climate impacts and they are desperate to build more fossil fuel infrastructure. This decision exposes the governments climate change agenda as political and not based on science. 2/
In drafting our motion we consulted with @IPCC_CH scientists who clearly stated that new fossil fuel infrastructure and the expansion of the oilsands is inconsistent with a the Paris agreement and an ambition of limiting warming to 1.5C 3/

If journalists want to understand what frustrates environmental scientists nothing better demonstrates what is troubling than the news story I have seen re-tweeted numerous times today. It typifies what is wrong with environmental journalism. #bcpoli #abpoli #cdnpol @sjmuir
Here is the story it addresses a complaint about river crossing work conducted on the #transmountain pipeline. It starts with an overwrought headline: "Trans Mountain pipeline work destroyed salmon habitat, scientist says" theprovince.com/news/local-new… #bcpoli #abpoli #cdnpol 2/
Pardon me @theprovince the same story appeared in the @globeandmail and other media outlets.

Now let's see what the story entails: approximately 17 m of river affected in an aquifer system that includes literally thousands of kilometers of river area. #bcpoli #abpoli #cdnpol 3/
