Former gas pipeline engineer on last night's Ladysmith fire near the @FortisBC LNG tank storage: "Didn't ever suspect they were allowed to build an #LNG facility anywhere near population centres, let alone on the island... #LadysmithBC #bcwildfires
@FortisBC ..Engineer: "If LNG gets released, as we know, it forms an explosive vapour cloud that drifts around until it is ignited by something. In this case, it would be the forest fire... #LadysmithBC #LNG
@FortisBC .."The LNG storage tank must be kept cold. If not LNG can warm up, expand & burst the tank, releasing this vapour cloud. No water spray will make any diff. These facilities are being allowed w/o knowledge of LNG's dangers. BC doesn't need a disaster of that size to finally learn"

In my career, I have never been more concerned than I am for what this province will face in the next ~36 hours.

#BCwildfires
There is the chance of (some) rain for a few areas by Sunday night / Monday, but between then and now we will have to navigate one of the most volatile combinations of natural and human factors that many of us have ever seen.
An unprecedented wildfire season, our second major heat event, and the looming fourth wave of the pandemic are coalescing in to one critical period.

And: short of a complete and unseasonal weather shift, we have at least another month of wildfire activity ahead of us.

ICYMI, this is one of the best pieces of journalism I've read in a long time. David Broadland in Focus on Victoria, on the perilous BC forestry mess that the BC NDP steadfastly refuses to fix. Some key quotes to follow. focusonvictoria.ca/forests/90/ cc #oldgrowth #FairyCreek #bcpoli
.."Our investigation found the Ministry of Forests with its collective head in the sand and the logging industry feeding on the huge public expenditure of money used to fight the fires.." #bcwildfires #WhiteRockLakeFire #bcpoli
"..testimony provided to an Oregon court in 2019 revealed that clearcut logging, followed by replanting, creates fuel conditions that make fires easier to ignite and harder to control. These effects persist for decades..." #BCWildfires

Some morning thoughts about #wildfires and forest management in #bcpoli:

About a month ago I started playing drop in soccer again.

My first night there, there were three guys I didn’t know, talking about setting wedges + other things I know to be associated with falling trees.
I asked them if they were arborists, or if they worked in the forest industry.

They said neither, they are forest fire fighters on the local crew. This was a couple days before the heat dome, and we talked about how busy they expected fire season to get in the coming weeks.
They haven’t been at soccer since, and, as there are mercifully fewer fires here on the Island, I assume that’s because they are redeployed to the interior, where hundreds of fires are raging.

158 acres of our 160 acre property burned to a crisp in the #mckaycreekwildfire last week. Our house and immediate yard just barely (and luckily!) survived. Many factors were beyond our control, but some things we did likely helped save what did survive. #BCWildfires #bcwildfire
We had just over 30 hours between when the fire started and when it reached our house. There was no evacuation order or alert, even after our place was burned… but none was really necessary, we could see it coming!

As soon as we saw the smoke plume (~20km away), we got to work:
1) we weed whacked/ mowed everything around the house down super short
2) we set up irrigation all around the house and on the roof - we aren’t a ranch, so it was literally garden hoses and hose sprinklers
3) we moved all fuels (propane, gas) away from the house area

British Columbia is no stranger to #bcwildfires and the challenges they present. Today, we may not know exactly what kind of #bcwildfire season we’ll face this summer, but the first thing I want to say right off the top is that we’re ready. 👇 #bcpoli
Dr. Bonnie Henry and Minister @adriandix have developed specific orders and guidelines for employers and employees in various sectors to help protect workers and the public from #COVID-19 – these apply to @BCGovFireInfo #bcwildfire
As an essential government service, the @BCGovFireInfo has remained open during the pandemic, and it has done so safely with the support of @WorkSafeBC – something that will continue during #bcwildfire season.
