In 2020 the Allegheny County Jail tried to ban paper books from entering their facility. Warden Harper cited the pandemic as a reason.

This ban was lifted; however, the Warden now rejects titles that fall well within the posted guidelines for books being sent to incarcerated people.

There aren't actually *too* many restrictions on getting books into the SCIs. Allegheny County Jail on the other hand has a TERRIBLE book policy and no library. An admin that doesn't care about keeping people alive can't be expected to care about reading. #bannedbooksweek

The worst part of the policy is that IT'S NOT TRANSPARENT! Even if families order books through barne&nobles they are regularly rejected and people don't why. Often not even notified. They get sent back to the seller and people don't always get their money back. 2/4
We're advocating for a better policy that would allow people to get books from more sources (including us!) and transparency for people on the inside, the people sending them books and the public. ACJ needs a REAL library (and a lot of other things like healthcare!) 3/4

In a nation claiming a right to free speech as a fundamental aspect of its law/identity, the power of the state is being used to ban books & works -- including the 1619 Project. We are in dangerous times. As historian Tim Snyder says: We all must pick an institution & defend it.

1/ Since #BannedBooksWeek is over, now it's time for #BanRacistBooksWeek. There are two books that I've submitted a Request for Reconsideration to (ironically) the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library.
2/ The books are Monticello Scrapbook (1939) and Young Tom Jefferson's Adventure Chest (1942), both by Betty Davis Via, children's historical fiction about the life of Thomas Jefferson.
3/ The request is to move them to the ACHS Reading Room, where two other books by Davis are shelved, instead of the juvenile section of the library.
