The tragic death of a 22yo in Bangalore as her car submerged in the rains at KR circle brings us back to the labyrinth that is #bangaloretraffic. Clearly we have it terribly wrong. But where did it start? Why do our underpasses flood? Somebody should ask him - Dr S Subramya Image
#Subramanya became the BBMP commissioner in 2007, handpicked by #hdkumaraswamy. Bangalore was growing exponentially. We had shut down HAL and the swanky new Bangalore airport had come up (close to Goa). The Cauvery Junction was pivotal to the smooth flowing traffic to the airport
#subramanya came up with the idea of an underpass which was (rechristened as magic box) at the junction. This was the first of its kind infrastructure experiment in the country. The idea was to make Mekhri Circle a signal free corridor and year was 2008. This was his brainchild.

Being in the center of the #bangalorerains, I feel people r still unaware about ground realities:
- No water restoration in societies in Bellandur for 3-4 weeks. That means not just drinking water. No water in Bathrooms. Not a single drop.
- Electricity is there...
...but on the verge of going out anytime.
- This is me sitting in Sterling society right opposite Ecospace, the water on the road is not going away since 30-40 hours. It will be 2 days by the evening. No action plan in visibility to solve this. I see govt has abandoned this area
- Societies with 2 level basement parking have cars fully submerged in water for more than 24 hours now. There is no sign of pumping out water because the source of water keeps filling the basement with more speed.
It looks like our cars are submerged in a lake for weeks...

Just spent another week in amazing, crazy Bangalore. I naturally compare it to San Francisco, where the political, economic and infrastructural struggles have deep parallels.

You see, one spends a lot of time in traffic in Bangalore, so one has time to think:
1/ Bangaloreans love to hate their traffic. Case in point: we’re moving @Rippling to a new, larger office soon. Site selection is constrained by the fact that many employees will move when the company moves, even if it’s just a few kilometers up the street.
@Rippling 2/ The water table in B’lore has dropped by up to 900 feet (!) in 20 years. Now, businesses (and cartels) truck in water. Towns outside the city earn income by capturing rainwater and selling it. I felt guilty taking a morning shower.
