1. My #SamarkandSummit orientalist🧵on its toponym and etymology. Incorrect is #Wikipedia's #Samarkand etymon entry and false analogy to #Tashkent. Both #Samarkand, like neighbouring #Bukhara, remain extensively debated in eastern #MiddleIranian #philology.
2. #Samarkand, contra #Wikipedia, is not 'stone city'. The first element /sm’r/ remains unexplained. On #Sogdian sm’rknδh [Ancient Letters], cf. Chin. Samojian 颯秣建 Gr. Μαρακάνδοι, scholarly consensus exists only on second compound, #Sogdian 'town, city'.
3. #Sogdian knδh 'town, city' > #Christian #Sogdian qθ; /sm’r/ element unmentioned in Gharib 1995 [Sogdian #Dictionary], @iranicaonline, or EI2 [Enc. of #Islam) entries. See @Brill_ME_Africa EI2, VIII/1995: 1031-032, s.v. #Samarkand Schaeder (rev. Bosworth).

Just read @SHendry775's #autobiography, #MeAndTheTable, very different from the first one "Remember My Name" by John Docherty almost 30 years ago. If you're a #snooker fan/nut like me, then it's a must read. Got through it in record time too! My first sporting hero.
This man was the reason why I found myself down the club constantly in my mid to late teens, why I went to watch him at Woodlesford #Snooker Center before he was number 1 and World Champ. He missed a century and rolled/bounced his warped £40 cue across the table in frustration 😃
I'm so grateful that I got to see him at the #Crucible on the last day of the world final where he beat @jimmywhite147 with a session to spare. It was great to see them both come out in the evening with #PeterEbdon, the late Len Ganley and one or 2 other pros. #snooker

At dinner, I learned more about corruption + racism built into society by our masters. A book we discussed (Zinn) was used as part of this "Left" resource's bibliography. I had to share. [A thread]

@BlackSocialists - thoughts on this resource?

It very simply lays out the case that we are all being controlled. It covers hidden history of the United States including their (and, due to the systems created by our masters, our) racism.

If you haven't been in school for a while (or are in a terrible school), some of the words might trip you up. Dictionary.com and Wikipedia.org are two good resources to help you.
