1. The #US #space agency's refrigerator-sized satellite managed to shave 33 minutes off the orbit of a 520ft-wide (160m) asteroid known as Dimorphos when it careered into it at 14,000mph (22,000km/h) in September last year.
2. That is nearly five times greater than predicted and more than 25 times the change in orbital period required for the mission to be considered a success.
Dimorphos orbits a much larger 2,550ft-wide (780m) object called Didymos 6.8 million miles from #Earth.

Object was discovered by the Konkoly Observatory in Hungary a few hours ago. Temporary designation of the object is Sar2667. It is expected to enter the atmosphere at around a 45° angle, coming from the East. 2/
Impact time of 03:00:03 has an uncertainty of a few minutes as it stands, but should be narrowed down to a few seconds by impact time. I'll keep it updated here in this thread. 3/

The prestigious international journal @Nature has expanded its scope beyond science and is now publishing papers in the field of Biblical archaeology. A paper published today asks the question "Did God smite the sinners of Sodom with an #asteroid?" nature.com/articles/s4159…
I just skimmed through the paper and see that my model of asteroid airbursts is cited as the mechanism by which God smote this evil city. Here's a screenshot of the paper's Figure 53, which shows a cross-section of a fire-and-brimstone event I simulated.
It must sound like I'm making this up, especially if you recall my April Fool's joke claiming that the Alabama legislature proclaimed that the value of pi is exactly 3 (see snopes.com/fact-check/ala…). But this is Biblical archeology, not Biblical math, & so within @Nature's scope.

The extra-terrestrial particles recovered on the summit of Walnumfjellet (WN) within the Sor Rondane Mountains, Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica, indicate an unusual touchdown event.

The biggest asteroid of the year is set to fly past Earth tonight. The space rock, dubbed 2001 FO32, is nearly half a kilometre wide — that’s more than twice the height of India’s Statue of Unity, the tallest statue in the world.
Moreover, it will be closing in on the planet at a whopping speed of 123,876 kilometres per hour (kmph), which is faster than an average asteroid.

Two #asteroids with an estimated diameter between 19 and 49 metres will pass by Earth on Tuesday, September 1. While both of them are relatively large, only one of them will be very close to Earth in terms of astronomical distances.
