SMArt 155 is one of two 155mm munitions (the other being BONUS) that contain a pair of submunitions capable of scanning the target area and firing down on targets. Below is a cutaway of the round with the two submunitions inside. 2/

Obviously, L/52 guns, base bleed-projectiles, and so forth has meant ranges in general have been growing in recent years for artillery. However, Finland has already picked the low-hanging fruit, including getting the @Nammo 155 mm IM HE-ER (40 km range). nammo.com/product/our-pr…

August 24 seems to have become a black day for #Ukrainian artillery. Not because of events at the front, but on the home front. A missile strike destroyed 3 large workshops of the #Shepetivka repair plant.

The shops even before the SMO were full of all kinds of #artillery being repaired, and now you can imagine how full they were. I think a couple or three dozen can be crossed out. The exact number we are unlikely to ever know.

This is a very interesting short report that has been posted by @Osinttechnical. There are a few insights on war and #leadership that we might gain from this summary, assuming the account from a 'Russian soldier' is authentic. 1/15 🧵
2/ First, the most lethal thing on the battlefield remains a human. But, the most lethal and effective weapon system on the ground in #Ukraine is artillery. The decline in the amount & use of #artillery since the Cold War must be fixed in western armies.
3/ But, as recent studies (including some really excellent reports from @RUSI_org) have shown, the industrial base for weapon and munitions production has declined. This will need to be redressed quickly.

Artillery is the “bread and butter” of war. Ukraine’s “main” artillery calibers are 122 and 152 mm. The problem with 152 mm is that #Ukraine DOES NOT produce ammo of this type (all it has is the legacy from the Soviet war machine).

Thus, even though 🇺🇦has 152 mm cannons, it is quickly running out of ammo. Given the intensity of the conflict, it won’t be long before 🇺🇦 doesn’t have any 152 mm ammo left. If that happens, 🇺🇦 forces won’t be able to shoot back, and 🇷🇺artillery will overwhelm them.

65 Arsenal - a storage base for #artillery and #rocket ammunition built in 1918 in #Balakleya to supply the #RedArmy. After the collapse of the #USSR , the arsenal was handed over to the #Ukrainian Armed Forces. The #Russian Army has taken control of the arsenal.

In the Southeast sector #Russia has no #logistics problems with supplies getting trucked in via the DPR & LPR .If anything the #Ukrainian forces stuck here have logistics trouble with supply lines stretching to #Lviv nearly 1200km away ,nothing is getting out of #Kiev ,#Kharkiv .
To their credit #Ukrainian forces seem to have Prepositioned significant ammunition , troops & equipment in hardened dispersed storages in the east which they're using to fight on .

As an ex-gunner in the Royal Artillery, I will start by defining artillery as ordnance that is capable of long-range indirect fire at a target too distant to be seen. I.e. does not need line of sight to the target. Which includes Mortars, Artillery shells, Rockets and Missiles.
Artillery needs an observer to be effective, whether that is a person on the ground giving adjustments, or electronic means, such as a drone or the like. The observer adjusts the fire by telling the guns adjust the aim left, right or up and down to hit the target.

The FARP projection envisaged the acquisition of around 3000 #artillery pieces which were subdivided into 814 truck-mounted guns, 1,580 towed guns, 100 tracked self-propelled guns, 180 wheeled self-propelled guns and 145 ultra-light howitzers.
