2/ Farmers are the backbone of our agro-economy. There is a void left after our textile industry was messed up by cheap chinese clothing & mazitye. If ever we have to be serious about reviving this industry, the Ministry that sets up prices for cotton should show seriousness...
3/ & look after the farmer who grows cotton. Its unacceptable that @CottcoZim & other buyers alike, can expect free cotton lint as if its grown in the wilderness. Like all other crops, a competitive price should be set up & a budget to buy the cotton should be in place on time.

Let’s assume you slaughter all the first bred 20pigs each weighing 70kg in seven months’ time; then you can make USD245 X 20 = USD4900 – USD2800 (feeding costs and other expenses) =USD2100 profit in 7 months.

That’s is profit made when starting with 2 pregnant pigs. The more the pigs you have the more the profit you make and the lower the feeding and operations costs. Economies of scale are real with pigs

A thread: it seems we have many smallholder farmers here doing piggery and many have requested that I do a thread on pregnant sow an piglet management. I will start with the mating process (serving a sow). Ensure the boar and the sow are of the same size in terms of mass
And ensure you don't force the process, hence the need for proper heat detection. Those who may want literature on heat detection just DM your email. Note down the date of serving the sow (eg 05/03/21), this date will give us the expected due date (birth).
Add 114/115 days as this is the gestation period for pigs. A series of vaccines are given to sow during the course of pregnancy (visit local Vet). 7 days before farrowing, wash your pregnant sow, deworm, spray to prevent mange and place in farrowing crate

In the spirit of #ZimAgricRising I would want to talk about managing finances in the Agri Business Sector. For all those that want to take up agriculture please treat it as a business because it is. You are growing crops so that you can sell the produce or value-added products.
You are rearing livestock and poultry so that you can sell the produce or value-added products. You are in it to make money and therefore so it needs to be managed well. So like any other business there will be the production, sales and marketing and of course the finance.
When you grow you will be able to hire full time employees who run these departments for you, but since most of us are starting small we are going to have to do some of these things ourselves and hire experts here and there.

Have a passion for goats. For me this is the biggest and most important aspect. I read every publication I can find on goat farming. I research issues. I talk to other goat farmers. I visit goat farms. I am on lots of goat farming groups. Talk, sleep, dream, think, read goats!!!
Choice of breed of goats. When you come to think of it, you want to own goats that are fertile, hardy, and very resistant to potential parasites that they might get in their environment. For me the best breed is the one that can do well in your environment.
