As the semester increasingly approaches, I’ll be getting back to posting my #WorkGoals during the week. Since I’ve got some new followers, this is a #thread about this practice. #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #WorkPractices
Each workday I post my #WorkGoals of things I plan to do. These are SMART goals; specific, measurable, achievable, realistic/relevant & time-based. It includes my teaching & meetings as well as research & grading tasks. Whatever needs to/can reasonably get done.
I set daily goals during the academic year as a way of keeping myself focused & not overwhelmed. I started this practice as part of @NCFDD’s Faculty Success Program in 2015 as a first year tenure track professor trying to balance teaching, research & service for the first time.
In my kind of profession people want to “shadow” you for 10 days or max work with you for a year to figure out what you are all about, highlight that on their profiles and CV and go about their lives.

Straight out of SNDT, they had been friends for over a decade and were willing to take the job only if we would work with both. We agreed and it’s been 10 years since.
Today friends I ask you to pray to Beyoncé or whom/whatever you believe in bc I’m getting new windows installed AND the first set of finals are due which means:
1. My one or more windows will be off during 20 degree weather

These windows were ordered in July when I bought the condo as part of the closing deal but I have a really big picture window which had to be specially made and got massively delayed in production so it just finally is now being installed!
I woke up ready to work on my book! I leave for a work trip Wed. so today is my only full day of research & writing. #WorkGoals:
-Re-read book chapter & make edits (2 hrs)
-Catch up a bit on email (1 hr)
-Read secondary sources (1 hr)
-Finish work trip prep

Also, I’ll have a bit of free time while I’m there so I’m still looking for recommendations of things to do/see/eat in the area. I’m staying at a hotel in Newport Beach near the Orange County airport I believe.
This week’s #workgoals are consistent. Every day I’m trying to write 1,000 words on the new book chapter & read second sources for at least an hour. That’s it. I’m going to work in Pomodoros & only check social media during breaks. Happy Monday!
Struggling with words today, though I’m getting a better sense of the shape of the chapter. 300 words written and many more moved around and deleted. 700 words to go today.
Yeeeeeea! Got into a groove at last & ended up writing 1,727 words today. My chapter draft is over 5k words now. Just slowly chipping away, day by day. Time for a snack & some reading by the window to catch the last gasps of dreary daylight here in Graysville USA.

I just want to thank the many folks who talked about experiences of being emotionally blocked from doing the work you want to do. I think I figured out what had been blocking me & am writing my way through it.
I keep coming back to this protest chant by Mary Hooks “The mandate for Black people in this time is to avenge the suffering of our ancestors, earn the respect of future generations & to be willing to be transformed by the work” I had to let myself by transformed by the work.
Morning yall. That #friendbreakup tweet is still going. It’s striking a chord with a lot of folks. I’ve tried to share resources as they get suggested, but my mentions are pretty chaotic right now.
In the last day & a half I’ve gained 2k new followers so I just want to say hi & welcome to the new folks. I tweet about everything from my academic work & teaching to pop culture& pleasure activism from my perspective as a fat Black queer polyamorous woman with chronic pain.
Some things you’ll see commonly: 1. #collectyourcousins (calls for typically white or straight folks to come educate one of their own who is engaging with me but not getting it). I do not encourage my followers to harass but actually try to help people learn with kindness.
