2/ We are WAY past due for some good variant news. But pinning our #Omicron hopes on a less virulent variant is not wise for 2 reasons:
1) It might not be less severe in those who are “immune naïve” (neither vaccinated nor with a previous infection—still millions of people).

3/ 2) Many more infections *even* if less severe can still lead to an avalanche of hospitalizations and deaths, and the risk of long Covid.

2/ And by buckle up, I mean BOOST-UP. And take other sensible precautions, especially leading up to the holidays. Things are not looking so good.
3/ Omicron has a significant foothold here, currently estimated at over 30% of current cases in the UK and doubling every 2-3 days 😳. In London where Omicron is a whopping 60+% of the cases, Omicron cases are adding to, but not displacing Delta…yet .

(1) The pandemic is triggering events like this worldwide.
Those who say "share the vaccines with all" do not realize how that would work in practice.
If the US becomes unable to afford to send aid to its existing recipient countries, those countries will be even worse off.

(2) Even if every "spare" vaccine in the world was re-routed to countries that don't have enough, it still would not prevent the existing and coming catastrophes.

(3) I'm saying this from a country (NZ) that is way behind on it's own vaccine program and is vulnerable to a large number of preventable Covid deaths if the next 90 days don't go well.

Great thread here on the "vaccine enthusiasm frontier" or "vaccine wall" and how it will vary widely based on geography. As seen from vaccinespotter.org data, pharmacies in many U.S. counties are seeing a proliferation of open appointments.
So why does it appear that the vaccination campaign is losing momentum? One of the major reasons is that the J&J vaccine, which has been paused, accounted for ~400,000 doses a day at its peak. As @juliettekayyem notes, we all expected this wall.

Part of my summer reading is @WmGermano 's book on getting your dissertation published as a book. Here are my key takeaways:
1. "Writing isn't a record of your thinking. It is your thinking" (28) so you have to write to think, come up with ideas, research. etc. (1)

My takeaway here is that we should not think of our writing as a separate activity. Keep writing, reading, thinking, exploring everyday.
