They investigated them in the early 2000s, thinking they could be sand/mud volcanoes.
A sand volcano is a cone-shaped landform created by liquefied sand being expelled from underground onto the surface.

The #Walton #barite mine, before and after!
One of the biggest barite deposits in the world is in #HantsCounty. It was mined from 1941-78. Today it's a lovely lake and greenspace.

A small, 1 metre-square outcrop of barite was discovered in 1894 but its location was lost to time until 1940 when prospector Roscoe Hiltz rediscovered it. Subsequent exploration confirmed the existence of a major deposit at the site and a surface mine started the following year.
In 1955 exploration drilling underneath the barite deposit discovered several metals: lead, zinc, copper and silver. Underground mining started in 1961 and made the site a significant producer of these metals along with its lucrative barite production.

Henry How was responsible for two mineral discoveries in #NovaScotia. How was born in London, England in 1828 and moved to #NS in 1854 to work at King’s College in #Windsor as a professor of natural history and chemistry. He became the university’s vice-president in 1877.

How discovered the mineral mordenite, named for Morden (Kings County) where he discovered it in 1864. Mordenite is used to clean up chemical spills, in animal feed and for water treatment.

When #gypsum mining started in #NovaScotia in the late 1700s, it was done by farmers who extracted blocks from their farms, hauled it by horse and cart to #Windsor and sold it to local traders. It was then exported to the US east coast for use as fertilizer.
