🆕 iOS 15 brings radical new cell prefetching behavior to UICollectionView and (for the first time ever!) UITableView — this is a quantum leap forward for smooth scrolling performance and power efficiency.

Here's a thread with some key takeaways ⬇️
What's the big deal?

In iOS 15, the system intelligently identifies spare time between frames, and uses that to start work on the next cell, giving you up to 2x time to prepare each cell!

Best part: just build your app with the iOS 15 SDK, and you get it automatically for free!
The new cell prefetching behavior "just works" because it doesn't change the threading model or API contract: cells are still requested the same way as before, just with slightly different timing; it's all about better scheduling and utilization of time on the main thread.

Launch day! I forgot how fun (and yes, stressful) these can be. 🧵
1/ Today, California became the first state in the country to launch an open source, standards-based digital vaccination record. Using the SMART Health Card framework, any resident who wants a digital copy of their vaccination record can get one at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov.
2/ This is entirely voluntary - anyone who's been vaccinated in California who wants a digital copy of their CDC card, this is for you. Don't want a digital copy? Totally cool! You still got vaccinated, which helped California re-open this week. Thank you. 🙏🏻

Some thoughts about #Apple's latest #WWDC21 and #privacy. A thread 👇
The good:

There's no question that Apple has brought some exciting new features for privacy lately. The possibility for users to block some #data collection, one's #email blocking trackers, the chance to use email aliases for interactions with companies...
#Safari hiding internet traffic from your internet service provider... all fantastic, and hugely important.

Apple is showing that #privacy is a competitive advantage. And their #security is much better than that of competitors

But before we get too complacent...

Some first impressions on Shortcuts for Mac…

AppleScript and JavaScript actions!

Excited to play with these. Great for bringing legacy workflows over from Automator.

#WWDC21
The Find, Resize & Move Windows actions look really powerful and are much more intuitive than using AppleScript for the same thing.
One of the new Finder actions is “Label Files’.

You can add colours but you can’t add custom tags.

This action isn’t available in Shortcuts on iOS, though the Files app supports labelling and tagging.

A love letter to Xcode 13, in 5 GIFs. Part one: it will automatically import frameworks as needed. #WWDC21
Part two: it spots when you're trying to unwrap an optional and completes it for you. #WWDC21
Part three: it's able to complete properties inside properties, making things like "view.corn" complete into "view.layer.cornerRadius". #WWDC21

What's new in SwiftUI for iOS 15? I just spent an hour and 20 minutes answering that question with lots of live code examples – and, inevitably, my dogs 😅 Watch the replay here:
And now I’m going to make a snack, pour a glass of wine, and get busy writing – the night is still young 😎
Writing done with one minute to spare before the day ends! What’s new in SwiftUI for iOS 15, including AsyncImage, pull to refresh, swipe actions, and more, *plus* 37 all-new Xcode 13 project downloads for sample code: hackingwithswift.com/articles/235/w… #WWDC21

Okay I got mad enough about Apple's Mail Privacy Protection to write it up.

It's bad news: big email marketing biz Litmus expects Apple Mail on iPhone to be almost 50% of opens.

That's ~50% of your data gone.

Worse though, it hurts small pubs the most.

tk.gg/posts/apple-ma…
If this works like @heyhey then we can guess Apple has a database of 3rd party trackers that it will block outright.

No word as to if they will detect sneakier marketers (I assume yes). Or if they will load everything else via a proxy (also assume yes).
Regardless, if you're a big publisher you're surely going to see a double digit percentage change in open rates from when iOS15 rolls out, which will mean your relative clickthrough rates jump substantially (we assume Apple aren't working on those).

Lots of information about the #WWDC21 Digital Lounges:

- It's all on Slack (wwdc21.slack.com)
- Tap the lightning bolt to request help.
- Questions will be posted through a dedicated "Ask a question" form.
- Each lounge has dedicated activities throughout the week.
It's super tightly moderated, which makes sense – you can't post freely in the channels or message other attendees. An exception appears to be the study halls, where free conversation is allowed for the Developer app challenges. These challenges are sounding fun!
Over 5000 people have already joined the Slack, so I'm already feeling much love and respect for the Apple team tasked with moderating this. Please be considerate attendees, folks!

You know how each browser used to have totally different technologies for making add-ons or extensions. (They weren’t even called the same thing.) And how more recently, several browsers totally changed their extensions to use a similar set of APIs as the others? Yeah. That.
Now it’s official. There’s now a WebExtensions Community Group, initiated by Apple, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla, for aligning on a common vision for browser extensions and to work towards future standardization. w3.org/community/webe…

Web standards. For extensions.
If you’ve been considering an idea for an extension but hadn’t made it yet, now is a great time. It’s easier than it’s ever been to make one extension, one code base & ship it to all the browsers. And it will just keep getting easier over the next year / going forward.
