🧵Good morning, friends! Today marks the 13th #VisibleWomen event! This will be a thread that goes over the history & basics then we'll get started. Submission instructions also posted here: milkfed.us/events/visible…
What is the #VisibleWomen project? It's a effort to raise the profiles of women in the comic book industry **in order to get them work**. (More on that last part in a bit.)
For the next roughly 8 hours, this feed will signal boost portfolio & CV links of women in comics and related industries. We will then put those names and links on a spreadsheet database that is made available FOR FREE to any hiring professionals in the industry. #VisibleWomen

Hey, #VisibleWomen! I’m Amie, and I’ve been designing and encouraging comics for everyone for over 20 years. I’d like to remind you that there are plenty of fabulous hardworking and passionate women working to support comics.
There are women handling creator contracts and making sure they get their comps. There are women negotiating with paper manufacturers right now to try and get the paper to print that collection you’ve preordered actually gets to the printer.
There are women hiring new creators and encouraging established folks to reach out and do something new. There are women who read every word of everything we publish to make sure we don’t get sued.

The next #VisibleWomen is Monday, March 29. This is gonna be a thread about that.
I should probably start at the start -- the first #VisibleWomen day was in 2016. It started out of frustration at the perception that it was hard to find women who were qualified or wanted to draw mainstream comics. The first VW was for artists only. It went well.
So we did it again 6 months later. The goal was never just visibility; the goal was to get women work, to get them PAID. So we started producing a spreadsheet from the hashtag and offering it free of charge to any hiring professional in the publishing industry.

Look, #VisibleWomen is great. HOWEVER it brings to light an issue I talk about frequently: how few women artists email their work to Art Directors directly. There are SO many women currently sharing their work that I know 100% know AD names & should be emailing us their...
...work 3-4 times a year but do not. From what I hear from women it is fear. There is nothing to be frightened of! You will email your work & there will be silence. You will do it again. There will not be responses, but we are seeing your work! We are keeping you in mind...
...I see it all the time, a woman who should have been emailing a dream client YEARS before is still too scared to send their work in. There is not ONE chance! You cannot blow it! You send emails over time, we see consistent quality, even if you are not ready to hire yet...

Hey folks, happy #InternationalWomensDay !!

Quick thread. Today is a great day to take a look at who you're actually following here on Twitter. If you're a straight cis guy like me, chances are you're mostly following other men. Try taking the time to actually run the numbers!
If going through all your follows manually is too much of a chore (took me about half an hour), you might try using this automated tool a friend suggested. Permissions look OK and it seems reasonably close to the results I found: proporti.onl
Today I found that I'm probably following about 197 men, 110 women, and 6 nonbinary folks. That's honestly pretty disappointing. I'm not proud of that result. But now that I know, I can push myself to do better.
