More powerful statements from citizens in #China: "After seeing #Urumqi residents bravely took to the street on Friday and people in Shanghai organizing memorials for those who lost their lives in the deadly fire, I think they are too brave and I need to do something to ...
... let the world know about what they are doing. I may not be brave enough to directly participate in the protests, but I can stand by their side to let them know that they are not alone. After losing their freedom for three years, many people can't afford to eat, ...
... have lost their jobs or can't return to their homes. Many people have died from the secondary disasters of the pandemic. I think we can't let this keep happening."

More voices from #China: "I joined the protest because I was dissatisfied with the government's imposition of lockdowns, the government's abuse of power, the strict online censorship, the covering up of truth in the #Xinjiang fire and to show solidarity with people in Shanghai."
"After living under lockdown and strict pandemic control measures for the last three years, people don't have much money, and the government also didn't provide much subsidy during the process of the lockdowns. We have to use personal savings to buy supplies."
"Some businesses can't operate and employees can't go to work. Many people have mortgages for cars and houses, as well as the entire family's spending, tuition for children and medical fees for the elderly.

At about 19:49 on November 24, a fire broke out in a high-rise residential building in #Urumqi, killing 10 people and injuring 9 others.

Some people in China have expressed great sorrow and frustration online and in the streets.

Here’s what we know so far. 🧵 1/5 📷 WeChat
After the fire, there was speculation on social media that blamed the Covid-19 prevention measures for allegedly blocking fire trucks from entering the community and for the building’s locked door, sparking public anger and concern. 2/5
But, the Jixiangyuan community has been designated as a “low-risk community” since November 12, meaning residents are allowed to circulate freely. The residents of the 15th-floor apartment where the fire began, luckily exited the building safely. 3/5

Despite the risks that may involve in publicly questioning or criticizing the government, netizens in #China flooded social media posts about the fire in #Urumqi and the subsequent official responses with criticism and skepticism, with many using repetition of words or...
... special symbols to express their despair. Either to mock the government officials’ responses to the tragedy or to prevent the posts from being censored online, many used the repetition of “yes,” “ok,” or “ha” in Mandarin under posts about the government’s response to the fire
Others are way more direct, as they point to the fact that the only fact is Urumqi and other parts of #Xinjiang have been placed under strict quarantine for more than 100 days.

The anger, discontent and frustration and despair that can be felt through the countless videos from #Xinjiang’s #Urumqi, where people took immense risks to go onto the streets to protest and directly confront local officials, are showing the fundamental impact of #China’s ...
... ruthless imposition of the zero-Covid strategy and the lack of flexibility of the policies. As @Yaqiu told me in my piece earlier this week, what these protests reflect, is a society bent to the extreme, where people are taking protest as their last resorts for survival.
They know the immense risks and consequences that might involve in this type of protest, but they still decide to go ahead with joining the others to openly voice their grievances because they and society as a whole, have been pushed to the brink.
