Journey2 #Pothigai is a great opportunity2see the vegetational variation in #KMTR,as the altitude varies, as crucial part of the trek is vertical climb& while nearing the peak, it's almost 90degree slope. This is view of Karaiyar&the surrounding vegetation from Thulukkan mottai
From Karaiyar to almost mid way to kannikatti, Tropical evergreen forest with many layers and dominated by taller and bigger trees like Ficus. The ground is not too wet and the springs in the higher altitude have already become big streams. #Pothigai #Tirunelveli #KMTR #forests
Midway2kannikatti,the size of the tree trunks reduces.Still trees are taller and ground becomes moist&the moisture level increases as we go up. In this season, this belt is invaded by giant spiders. This is near Injikuzhi. #Pothigai #KMTR #Tirunelveli Follow this thread 2 know more

#Thread of maps on Palayamkottai, now part of #Tirunelveli

As a city,Palayamkottai has a recorded history for more than a thousand years. It reached its zenith during the British era & was called as "Oxford of South India"

My first thread in 2022 is a tribute to #ThoPa
Palaymkottai was located in KeelKalaKootram, a revenue division in the east side of Porunai river (now called Thamirabarani). The fort itself was positioned to protect the lush farmlands & was at the intersection of the farmlands & pastures which designed its socio-cultural setup
Before the 1700s, the city was largely confined within the fort walls. But it had began expanding outside afterwards. The fort was a largely rectangular shaped structure with a number of bastions and four gates in four directions.

#Elections are supposed to be about electing representations for framing legislations

However the geography behind delimitation which doesnt consider complex socio-economic conditions promote communal polarization leading to deterioration of Democractic values

Understanding Delmitation:

The constituency delimitation is based on population. and for last delineation exercise, 2001 population was used. Average population was calculated to be 270000 people per constituency

#Map shows Population spread in Tamil Nadu

To delineate which village/town comes under which constituency, some rules are followed

To achieve the avg population, officials start with headquarters for the constituencies in district & add villages/towns within same or neighbouring taluks(subdistricts) in same district

"The Stream where the baby was dropped to take a Jackfruit" ("பிள்ளைய போட்டு பலாப்பழம் எடுத்த ஓடை")

This is the actual name of a stream in #Tirunelveli (marked in red in old satellite image). 20 years ago my uncle explained why it got it's name and I am posting that story here Image
It's a very small stream that is part of the Thamirabarani river system in #Tirunelveli close to District Science Center near Kokkirakulam. The stream merges with the thamirabarani (Porunai) river near the Sulochana Mudhaliyar Bridge Image
The story goes like this- Once upon a time,a lady was giving bath to her baby in the stream. Due to heavy rains the previous night, the stream had flooded. Along with the flood waters, a jackfruit was coming in the stream. The lady seeing the jackfruit tried to take the jackfruit.

A Thread on "Trade Relations between Tamil Nadu and South East Asia as Gleaned from Inscriptions...!"

The Commercial and Cultural contacts between Tamil Nadu and South East Asian Countries seem to have existed even from the beginning of the Christian era!
#Sangam Literatures say that the import & export of articles between these countries had happened in great vigour through the ports located on the Coromandal coast, viz #Kollam, #Eyilpattinam, #Kaviripumpattinam, #Tondi, #Marungurpattinam (#Alagankulam), #Korkai and #Kanyakumari!
The author of the Periplus of the Erythrean Sea describes the ports of the Coromandal coast as follows. “Among the market-towns of these countries and harbour where the ships put in from Damirica and from the north, the most important are, in order as they lie, first Camara...1/2

#History/#Art thread – From my recent trip to Madurai/Tirunelveli. On Jain sites (some with a rich history dating back to at least the 3rd cent. BCE), early Pandyan rock-cut cave temples (7th-8th cent. CE) & the amazing Vettuvan koil.

Pic: Mahavira (~8 cent CE), Kizhakuyilkudi
Before I start on the places, the history around all this is fascinating & splits opinion. Is it apt to call the script Tamili/Tamil Brahmi? Did it develop independently in the Tamil country/come with the Jain monks from the north? Were 8,000 Jains actually impaled in Madurai?>
>Were the Saivites overaggressive in promoting their faith? Shall only be happy to discuss on these separately (unless it gets too long/irrational). And I’m not posting every inscription from the places here, despite their importance. Again, shall be happy to discuss them.
