There's an article being shared recently which says that the #TiananmenSquareMassacre didn't happen, and that it was the result of a failed C/DIA attempt at color a revolution. It mentions State Department cables posted on Wikileaks. A rebuttal 🧵
First of all, while I have no doubt that the C/DIA have been trying to destabilize China for decades, it's a bit silly to think that the CPC isn't also capable and willing to use agent provocateurs to sabotage a peaceful protest movement.
In fact, making it violent would virtually guarantee that the movement would not succeed and would make open revolt / civil war much less likely after seeing the use of such violence. History following speaks for itself.

I interviewed Stuart in 2009 for the @nytimes. He told me he shot the photo from the balcony of the Beijing Hotel and that his film was "smuggled out in a packet of tea by a French student and delivered to the @MagnumPhotos office in Paris." The contact sheet is fascinating:
Charlie Cole was working for @Newsweek next to Stuart on the balcony. His version is much tighter (taken with a 300) and won @WorldPressPhoto. He hid the film in his hotel room, attaching it to the flush chain in the tank of the toilet. Sadly, Charlie died in 2019. RIP 🙏🏻
