This Elizabeth Yakubu, aka Mama Bethar.

She is one of the 20,000 maize farmers we worked with on our maize project in Kaduna state and it is humbling to see how far she has come. ImageImage
Elizabeth talks about how work used to be tedious and her harvest didn’t measure up.

This meant less profits that didn’t make the next farming season worth going into optimistically. Image

For every production cycle, there is always an expected weight at the end of the cycle.

There are lots of factors that add up for a bird to reach the expected weight. #agriculture #ThriveAgric #farming ImageImage
Most farmers often overlook the stocking density but we recommend to our farmers to stock at 70 square feet per bird during the rainy season.

Raising birds during the dry season is a different ball game so we recommend more spacing to avoid birds going into heat stress. ImageImage
Heat stress is every poultry farmer's nightmare as it can lead to a high mortality rate and a drastic drop in body weight.

To avoid this, it is important to use the correct stocking density best suited for the season. #foodsecurity ImageImage

Farm mapping is one of the important moving parts of our process.

The first thing we do is ask about the farm history, we ask questions like, how long have you been farming, what are the kind of crops were previously cultivated on the farmland? #Agriculture #ThriveAgric ImageImage
After, we check for proximity to water bodies for irrigation, we check the number of tree stands and stumps.

We also digitally map out the coordinates and size of the farmland to see how close it is to the next farmland. Image
The last part of this process is to collect soil samples to test if the nutrients present are suitable for optimal growth and yield.

We do all these just to make sure the farmland is suitable for the operation cycle and can match the projected yield that drives profitability. Image

Vaccines are extremely important during the poultry production cycle. A good vaccine schedule will determine how successful your poultry project will be.

Here is what our basic vaccine schedule looks like.
#foodsecurity Image
When the day-old chicks arrive, they are given the Lasota strain of the Newcastle disease vaccine.

Then on the 10th day after they arrive on a poultry farm, we administer the gumboro vaccine to fight the Infectious bursal disease.
#foodsecurity #agriculture Image
We follow this up with another Newcastle disease vaccine between the 14-16th day.

Finally, another set of Gumboro and Newcastle vaccines are administered between 17-19th days and 20-22 days respectively.

Winnowing in progress on one of our rice farms in Jere, Kaduna.

In grain preparation, winnowing is the post harvest process done after threshing. It is done to separate the grain from chaff and dirt using the wind.
#thriveagric #tgif #farmupdate #farmwiththrive #farmersfirst Image
The wind direction is a very important factor in the winnowing operation.

As seen in this video, the farmers are winnowing in the direction that the wind is blowing. Winnowing will not be effective if the grains are winnowed in the opposite direction of the wind. #thriveagric
Notice how excited our farmers are to be working on a Friday?😏 Could it be because it’s the end of the month and a new farming cycle is about to begin?🤔

Many still hold up the thought that farming is traditional and picture it as an activity for the old folks in the villages and their children🙄 Image
Some are quick to shut down the idea of "becoming a farmer", because they believe "carrying hoe and Cutlass" is not befitting of a certain social status they've acquired😳
The only reason anyone will still think this way, is either of these two reasons;
1) they've not heard of Thrive Agric
2) they're sleeping on us 🤦
