Il terremoto di ieri sera ha avuto un meccanismo focale di tipo compressivo, ovvero un tipo di terremoto in cui i due lembi della faglia, avvicinandosi tra loro, fanno salire il blocco di roccia verso l'alto.
Ciò è coerente con il contesto geologico dell'area, proprio al largo dell'isola di Sumatra è infatti in corso un processo di subduzione in cui la placca Indo-Australiana scivola al di sotto della placca della Sonda ad una velocità di circa 50-60 mm l'anno.
