THREAD: Here’s my statement on low-traffic areas/school streets to the Strategy & Resources Committee on 14th September. bit.ly/35J5VTC #LTN #StreetspaceLDN
The key question Cllrs should ask themselves is the following: What type of residential areas do you want for Sutton? Are Cllrs happy to keep the status quo? In certain residential areas this means turning a blind eye to thousands of cars rat-running,...
...trying to save time on their journey, and pumping toxic fumes directly into people’s bedrooms. Every individual will look at their own circumstances but my role is to look at the bigger picture and at the interest of all local residents.

Planters have been placed around #bricklane as #modalfilters. @TowerHamletsNow claims that local shops asked for it. But having asked around- the response is the same: "we didn't ask for it. First we heard about it was a leaflet last week, informing of this plan". #StreetspaceLDN
This no consult plan is to last till November to allow for "social distancing" and al fresco dining... UNTIL NOVEMBER?!

Residential side streets have become drop off and U-turn points.
Traffic will have make its way around already congested Commercial St. & Whitechapel High St.
There is also the option to make it Permanent after the 10 week period.
Businesses and locals are directing their anger at contractors installing the planters, when those who should be on the receiving end of that anger are no where to be seen.

Right now, there is nowhere in the UK where someone who doesn’t want to cycle will be forced onto a bike because they have no other safe option to get where they need to be.

The same can’t be said about driving.
All over the country there are places where individuals and families who don’t want to drive are left with no other option. Cycling feels too dangerous. Walking isn’t possible. Many are forced to buy cars they can’t afford just to keep a job.
You don’t want to cycle? That’s fine! You don’t have to. But imagine for a second how mad and disempowered you’d feel if that became your only choice.

It’d be shit, right?

Massively exciting to see radical schemes we’ve been working on with boroughs coming to fruition, delivered through @TfL ‘s #StreetSpaceLDN @willnorman. Here are just some of our highlights: Image
The Lee Green LTN, which we worked on with @LewishamCouncil throughout autumn and winter, engaging residents and helping deliver London's largest LTN in an area blighted by through traffic @OctaviaLewisham @JamesARathbone @SophieMcGeevor
In @LewishamCouncil, construction started on the Deptford Parks Liveable Neighbourhood, with a permanent school street, modal filters, continuous footways & street art. We have been working with @deptfordfolk since 2017, with @TfL funding received in 2018

It’s baffling that just two weeks after a really constructive debate where the Sutton Tories supported @SuttonCouncil plans & spoke positively of the merits of school streets, low-traffic neighbourhoods and temporary cycle lanes... #StreetspaceLDN
they are now actively campaigning against the majority of the schemes. Unfortunately this flip-flopping on issues and opposing anything the @SuttonLibDems bring forward at any cost has become the modus operandi of the Sutton Conservatives.
For the Tories it’s never about trying to make our area better but always about short term political opportunism. The irony is that our schemes have been scrutinised, funded & approved by the Tory Gvt & the Labour Mayor.

THREAD: Did a tour of the pop-up #StreetSpaceLDN infrastructure in @cityoflondon yesterday. With all the construction & utilities work, it’s hard to separate Covid works from others, but here goes
We’ll start with these wonderful 15mph pedestrian prioritiy signs Image
Beech Street has been closed to non-electric vehicles, with complementary closures in the area forming the basis of a low traffic neighbourhood at the boundary with @IslingtonBC Image
Quite a lot of parking has been suspended to make it easier for pedestrians to spill into the carriageway on filtered streets Image

It's been a hell of a few months for transport. The idea of low traffic neighbourhoods - allowing access by car but not rat running - has really taken off. To help explain the context in different areas, TfL have just released the ‘Strategic Neighbourhoods Analysis’ [THREAD 1/7]
Firstly, it sets some basic context, like how many people live in each neighbourhood and how many live without a car [2/7] ImageImage
It then explores how big an issue rat running may be, using modelled traffic data and actual walking/cycling casualties over the last three years [3/7] ImageImage

Following on from our emergency strategy published three weeks ago, today I have been able to agree @lambeth_council's programme for the next six months. We've agreed to re-purpose c.£1.8m from our highways budget to deliver the baseline scenario🚲🚶‍🛴...
Using this funding, the programme sets out where and when, by August, we will deliver:
🏡4 low traffic neighbourhoods
🚲3 healthy routes incl. protected cycle lanes
🛴3 access-only roads
🚶‍♀️6 more locations for pavement widening

However, our plan goes much further...
If we are able to access emergency funding, in the 'max' scenario we are planning to implement LTNs across large swathes of @lambeth_council and build 8 temporary cycle tracks, alongside a raft of school streets, pavement widening and cycle training programmes 🚶‍♀️🛴🚶‍♀️🛴
