Today may be a day to celebrate love, but #VDay will forever be stained with the blood of 17 kids shot to death at #StonemanDouglas one year ago today.

The #Parkland students didn't ask to become the mouthpiece for calling out the @NRA and its decades old fraud. But they did.
Fraud? Yes.

Those are the words of former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Warren Burger (1969-1986.)

Let me state it clearly:

NO COURT HAS EVER RULED THERE IS AN INDIVIDUAL CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS.

That is not, that is never, what the #2ndAmendment has said.
Watch for words like "school safety" and "God-given right" and "patriotic." The @NRA has spent lifetimes of money creating this narrative.

In my home state of Virginia, the Safe VA Initiative released policy recommendations for the 2019 term:

.@PiattPatti's son died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Watching others lose a child and knowing what they feel brings it all back. I don't have a problem with responsible gun ownership, but there is nothing responsible about owning an AR-15."

"If we want teachers to have to ability to make offensive measures, why not non-lethal weapons? It's terrible that we would have to, but if we do, that route should not be firearms." -@TomPrigg2018

Greetings from the @FLSenate, where they'll be voting out their bill in response to the #StonemanDouglas shooting today. That's after a rare Saturday session to amend the bill.
My thread on the Saturday session, which -- fair warning -- is Tolstoy-esque in its length though not its prose, is here:
The Stoneman Douglas bill will not be voted on till the afternoon, so sit tight if you're curious about that vote. In the meantime, this morning they'll be taking up HB7055, the big education bill.

OK, new thread! Greetings from the Senate Appropriations, where they're set to hear the school safety/mental health/gun access bill as well.
To clarify, the last absurdly long thread was House Appropriations. Now we're in Senate Approps. They'll do their version of the bill here, which is now unlike the House version in several significant ways, esp. after amendments in House Approps.
After this, both bills will head to the floor in either chamber.

Last night, I joined students & community members from Madison for a vigil for the #ParklandShooting. This is my speech:
We stand here today, not as community leaders, teachers, students, government officials, or bystanders... we stand here as members of humanity, as guardians of the good in this world.
I stand here in honor of my beautiful mother Joyce who took her own life with a gun before I was even two years old.

Y’all need to sit down with your “this is what happens when you take God out of schools” nonsense.

Because what you are doing is blaming people who don’t follow YOUR religion for the deaths of children. #StonemanDouglas #ParklandFlorida
This country was founded in large part because people came here to escape being forced to worship a certain way. Religious choice is one of the most basic tenets of the United States.
People aren’t being shot because schools can’t force religious teachings and customs on the student body.

They’re being shot because there’s still a stigma around mental health care, and because seeking it is often difficult and cost prohibitive.

1) Let me, a Broward schoolteacher near Marjory Stoneman Douglas, give a perspective on school shootings from the inside.
2) Once a year, my co-workers and I are birefed by a LEO on what to do if a gunman enters the school.

Inevitably, we listen to the stories of gun violence at similar schools.

I realize the LEO has given this spiel so much, it's automatic.
3) Rarely, an intimidating stranger will stroll purposefully down the main hallway of a school.

They are either a pissed-off parent, the plainclothes cop you're expected to stop in a drill, or the man who'll orphan your children.

Decide.
