The weapons and vehicles with which the apartheid regime gunned down over 170 South African school children in #Soweto 1976 came from West Germany.

East Germany (the #DDR), on the other hand, had been a leading supporter of the anti-apartheid struggle. A very brief thread:
The apartheid troops that were deployed to suppress the #sowetouprising drove trucks made by the West German Mercedes-Benz corporation. Their weapons had been delivered by West Germany, which maintained close relations with the apartheid regime until the very end.
We recently interviewed the anti-apartheid militant Ronnie Kasrils, who recounted his experiences & impression of the socialist states' solidarity with the ANC.
Kasrils was 1 of hundreds of anti-apartheid militants to receive military training in the #DDR.

🏫 Today, June 16 1976, young people in South Africa organized a peaceful march against a 1974 decree that made it mandatory for Black highschools to use the Afrikaans language–‘language of the oppressor’–as the medium of instruction. This is known as the #Soweto uprising

🧵👇🏽
Agitated by Black Consciousness, growing economic & political injustice, 30,000 youth–as young as 12 yrsold–took to the streets.

When the students were met w/ violent state repression, they stood firm and fought back. Some estimate that there were 700 fatalities that year. Image
Later, students shifted to more sophisticated tactics in organized units, such as ambush, barricade, subterfuge & the destruction of symbols of racist oppression

In solidarity, Black communities & over 250,000 workers went on strikes, inflicting significant damage on the economy Image

This is where my ideas go to grow. Since my return from South Africa - conclusion of the Feminist Giant World Tour - those notebooks have been whispering “We are waiting for you.” As I rested after 3-month tour, I knew that pile was home to all that I saw & experienced. With time
It has been such a privilege and gift to speak at all the places I’ve been to since September. So many incredible people along the way and rich, wonderful ideas that I brought home. Time to process them.
Earlier this year, I went on a 5-city tour of #Spain for @Capitan_Swing’s Spanish edition of my first book Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution. I went to Córdoba on my 2 days off in the middle of that tour. And I’m still filling the notebooks.
