What was Mohandas #Gandhi doing carrying wounded #British soldiers off the battlefield in #SouthAfrica in 1899? Gandhi was merely leading by example, in the ambulance corps he set up to support the British against the Boers in the Second Boer War (1899-1902). 1/12

But why would Gandhi support the British, especially since he had experienced the humiliation of racial discrimination in South Africa soon after he got there? It was #OnThisDay in 1893 that Gandhi was thrown off a train for refusing to comply with racial segregation laws. 2/12
This was more than a decade before Gandhi evolved his concept of #civildisobedience. He spent 21 years (1893 - 1914) in South Africa and went on to organize the #CivilRights movement, to raise the status of the indentured #Indian population there. 3/12

So, What Changed?
The whole atmosphere was charged with M fanaticism. ‘Ola Hu Uber not ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ was heard everywhere.
‘These are not Hindu-M riots,’ he would say. ‘These are M riots because in every single case it is they who start them and go on the offensive.’

When released from prison after serving 1 year R.I., he was felicitated by Motilal Nehru.

On his jayanti, let us know more about
#KeshavBaliramHedgewar, the man behind Sangh.

In May 1921, Hedgewar was arrested on charges of “sedition” for his “objectionable” speeches in
Maharashtra. The hearing of the case began on June 14, 1921. After a few hearings, he decided to plead his own case and read out a written statement on 5/8/1921.

After hearing it, Justice Smelly said: “His defense is even more seditious than his original speech!” In his
August 19 judgment, the judge ordered Hedgewar to give an undertaking in writing that he would not deliver seditious speeches for 1 yr, and furnish a bail bond of Rs3,000.
Hedgewar’s response was terse: “My conscience tells me that I am completely innocent. A policy of

Hi @JNarain3.
Thanks for ur concern.
No! lack of huge participation doesn’t & shouldn’t discourage me or u.
Infact it should motivate us to work harder to convince more ppl to join the campaign.
If ppl don’t join #FastAgainstEIA2020 then it’s our failure & not that of the ppl 1/5
A movement succeeds only if the citizens are convinced of- the #cause; #mode of campaign & the #ability of the individuals coordinating it.
1. Our cause is genuine as #DraftEIA2020 will destroy the environment;
2. #Satyagraha is a time tested & successful mode of struggle 2/5
3 So if ppl r not joining the campaign it only means that we do not inspire confidence in the citizens with regard to-
Either our commitment to the cause OR our ability to succeed in the struggle
So this should motivate us to work harder so that more ppl develop faith on us 3/5

If you really want to make a change in the world, do something hard like #nonviolent #resistance. Read up and learn #satyagraha or change. It takes #strength & #courage; physical force is forbidden even in the so-called most favorable circumstances.

If your cause is #righteous, Gandhi believed, the movement would speak for itself.

My personal justification for it is #psychological/#neurological (#CNS/#HPA).

If you use #violence, well the one with the biggest #ego or the biggest ego-extension (guns, tanks, war) will win.
Removing tools of violence (words, arms) from the equation, you form a mirror.

It's not easy though. You'd have to refine/drop/manage/elevate past your own #ego.

People - depending on personal history & psychology - sometimes become enraged at what they see in the #mirror.

I am currently reading this wonderful book by @Koenraad_Elst which gives amazing insight abt the defence of Godse and exposes the blunders commited by Gandhi (I refuse to use Mahatma), have decided that will be tweeting extracts from the same as I go along. #KnowYourLegacy
Untill now almost all the works published on Gandhi have been hagiographies with none really questioning Gandhi on some hard facts and hence this book comes as something fresh.. #KnowYourLegacy @muglikar_ @indiantweeter @TrueIndology
This book also provides an opportunity for the next gen to learn abt the mistakes commited during the freedom struggle and more importantly also abt the fact that it was not a single person or party which helped us attain independence #KnowYourLegacy @muglikar_ @TrueIndology
