⬆️ benefits from wildlife = improved views & actions toward wildlife, right?

Common assumption for #CommunityBasedConservation, but not many studies that assess these relationships

We 👀 at these links using the case of #Endangered reticulated 🦒 in #Kenya 🇰🇪
2/6 There are a # of benefits/costs, tangible/intangible, connected to wildlife conservation

In any community, there’s a diversity of ability/access/motivations to participate in conservation

We 👀 at perceptions of benefits, attitudes toward #giraffe, past 🦒 meat consumption
3/6 We asked:

🦒 Y/N for different types of benefits – two types ($ from tourism & job in cons/tourism) coded as cons benefits
🦒 Attitude toward giraffe on 5p scale
🦒 Most recent time of giraffe meat/part use – re-coded into never/1+ year/within last year

1/6 When we think about #wildlifetrafficking, how often do we think about #women? Urban wildmeat trafficking (UWT) is a unique workforce and identifying the impact that women have within it is necessary for effective conservation interventions.
#SSWGTC2020 @SCB_SSWG
2/6 Immovable gender expectations regarding the engagement of men and women within UWT may fuel misconceptions regarding women within the industry.
Men are traditionally viewed as holding more aggressive roles while women are seen as holding more “soft” roles such as food prep.
3/6 Using SSO from markets in the DRC, we looked at the involvement of women in UWT across the UWT supply chain. We sought to answer these questions as well as generate a profile for some women involved in UWT.

People & forests have been affecting each other’s ecology & survival for ages. This interaction challenges nature-culture dichotomy based conservation. Ignoring local forest ontology can reinforce inequalities and reproduce colonialism through conservation.1/6 @SCB_SSWG #SSWGTC20 Image
Pewen & people form each other. Highly-caloric branches & seeds fuel house & body; by gathering in the forest social norms of respect & care to #pewen are transmitted; reinforcing social bonds. Forests have been shaped by seed selection/dispersion/planting/fire use. 2/6 #SSWGTC20 Image
Pewen has protected Pewenche (people=che) from colonial expansion/hunger/cold. Pewenche protect #pewen with traditional harvest norms, fire brigades, reclaiming land, pushing env laws. Trees & people are entangled in cultural, spiritual and economic relations. 3/6 #SSWGTC20 Image

You may be thinking about intervening to change people’s behaviour. Communication is key!

But how do your messages reach people and how does this process influence behavioral outcomes?

We need to think about social networks! (see video below!) 1/6

#SSWGTC20 @SCB_SSWG
Social networks are how people communicate🗣️🫂 in everyday life: key process in how conservation messages can gain social meaning and change behaviour. Understand this to improve intervention design! 2/6

1/6 We explored 3 socio-psych theories to predict livestock producers’ use of lethal dingo control

Social identity was most useful, so understanding ID is important to understand & influence behaviour
@SCB_SSWG #SSWGTC20
2/6 Effective conservation policy & intervention requires understanding what drives human behaviour bc #humanwildlifeconflict is often more about humans than wildlife

I explored conflict b/w dingoes & livestock producers in Australia
3/6 Surveyed Australian livestock graziers to document use of lethal/nonlethal predator control to protect livestock
Linked manmt behaviours with 3 socio-psych frameworks
