Indonesia has a terrible reputation for air safety. Its carriers were banned from Europe from 2007 to 2018 because standards were felt to be so lax.

On Sunday, Indonesian military chief Hadi Tjahjanto said that a naval ship sent to search for a Sriwijaya Air plane that had crashed into the waters off Jakarta had received a signal at the site of the crash.
Tjahjanto said the KRI Rigela naval ship, equipped with a remote-operated vehicle, which arrived at the search site on Sunday at 3 a.m. local time, may have detected the signal from the aircraft.
"Based on the results of monitoring, and according to the coordinates given from the last contact, it is strongly suspected that there was a signal from the plane," he said at the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) at North Jakarta's Tanjung Priok seaport.

the Indonesian search and rescue agency announced. "The position of the machine is believed to be between Laki Island and Lancang Island," said the chief of the authority, Bambang Suryo Aji. The two islands are part of the Thousand Islands group off the coast of Java.
Several pieces of debris were found that may have come from the aircraft. According to the Ministry of Transport, there were 62 people on board the Boeing 737-500.

Sriwijaya Air took delivery of the plane (Boeing 737-524, reg. number PK-CLC) in May 2012, when it was 18 years old. It was previously operated by United Airlines and Continental before that.
In 2016 Indonesian authorities issued a regulation, PM 155/2016, limiting the age of aircraft operating in Indonesia to 35 years.
