No need to rely on a leaked report - health care workers have been sounding this alarm for years - and especially the past few months. This is the worst I have seen in my 19 years in emergency medicine. So why is this happening? 1/
Inflow >> Outflow. #s of patients waiting for transfer from our hospital to a LTC (full), repatriation back to a hospital in their home region (full), or to home (no home care available) FAR EXCEEDS #s of patients waiting in the ED for a bed on the ward 2/
Yet those waiting fill all the ED beds as beds on the ward are full. We play ED "musical beds" in order to assess patients and often care for new patients in suboptimal spaces - hallways, waiting rooms, quiet-ish corners. The inflow will always continue - we do not close. 3/
Today's FAO report is clear: Doug Ford is underspending on #Healthcare.
At a time when ERs across the province are closing due to staffing shortages, this is unacceptable.

It’s inexcusable to underspend on #healthcare while nurses & other healthcare workers are burnt out.

I met with a family doc in Guelph this morning. Her story is a system on the brink of collapse. She is referring seriously ill patients to specialists & they are waiting months as their conditions get worse. She’s forced to provide mental healthcare she’s not trained to provide.

How did Dr.Kieran Moore pocket a full salary for a position he assumed mid yr? This should scream conflict of interest. @ON_Integrity

Tonight, one of the hospitals has no code blue response team due to the nursing shortage. If you know what this means, you'd be crying with me right now. This is beyond scary! Some hospitals call it the rapid response team, which comprises of experienced critical care nurses
who respond to cardiac arrest situations within the hospital. Last time I worked at one of the hospitals, they were looking for nurses to sign up with this team. However, no one wants to, given the lack of incentive for added responsibilities and constant adrenaline rush.
This crisis will definitely cost lives but the government just doesn't care. Please note that only experienced critical care nurses can work in this role. Unfortunately, thousands of nurses have quit due to poor working conditions & bill 124. New nurses, if any, need mentoring
