It has been barely a week since Georgia law enforcement agencies murdered Tortuguita for protesting Cop City.

Today, Governor Brian Kemp declared a State of Emergency that authorizes him to call on as many as 1,000 National Guard troops to quell protests at any moment.
The true emergency, however, is that law enforcement agencies across the country are killing people every day. From #GeorgeFloyd in Minneapolis, #RayshardBrooks in Atlanta, #TyreNichols in Memphis, and of course, Tortuguita.
Kemp's declaration of a State of Emergency isn't about property damage at Saturday's protests at all. It's about police murdering #TyreNichols and Tortuguita within two weeks of each other. They're trying to instill fear in anyone who stands up against police brutality.

STATEMENT ON GEORGIA HB 838:

For the past few weeks, Fair Fight Action has watched Georgia’s legislative leaders respond to the murders of #RayshardBrooks and #AhmaudArbery, as well as violence toward those demanding justice in our streets.
We were deeply disturbed by Senate Republicans' attempts to ruin a bipartisan hate crimes bill by adding law enforcement protections due to the fact that solid police protections already exist in Georgia law.
After immense pressure from our allies, Senate Republicans decided to remove the law enforcement protections from the hate crimes bill and insert it into another bill, HB 838, rather than break away from the amendment completely.

Some Atlanta police have called out sick in solidarity with a fmr. officer charged with murdering 27-yr old #RayshardBrooks. Those officers—plus the 57 members of the Buffalo Emergency Response Team who quit & continued collecting taxpayer-funded salaries—are cowards.

To the police protesting justice: If you don’t want to do the hard work of policing, or be answerable to the public that pays your salary, then ACTUALLY quit. Resign. Give up your salary, your benefits & your pension. Protest is cheap if it doesn’t cost you anything.

Putting on a badge, a uniform & a gun doesn’t make you part of a club.
Despite outdated terms like “brotherhood” that show up in the names of police unions, it’s not actually a fraternity. The loyalty of police is pledged to the public & to the law, not to each other. #velshi

This is #RayshardBrooks, in his own words.

In this heartbreaking interview filmed just four months ago, Brooks speaks about the agony of being trapped in a prison reentry and probation system that won’t let him get back on his feet.
His killing at the hands of Atlanta police highlights the need for police reform. But it demonstrates something else that is equally urgent, though rarely discussed: America’s desperate need to overhaul our probation system.
Who knows what Brooks could have become, with the right support and better systems? His death represents a double-tragedy that spotlights twin failures in our criminal justice system.

We're not just looking at a "theoretical, academic model of a perfect market," as @SenSherrodBrown would suggest.

Systemic racism in our financial system must be taken account for AND addressed in order to have a economic recovery for ALL Americans for #COVID19.

I saw because it's important that you know. I went down to the protest at University & Pryor to offer support & work with a group of clergy friends of mine whose mission it is to de-escalate situations and serve as "front line protestors" (i.e. standing between police 2/13
& protestors). APD was on the streets and a large presence of GA State Patrol was on the interstate. At one point in the afternoon, the protestors decide to "take the interstate" & the organizers & the group I am with do our best to talk them out of it. 3/13

I’m at the Zone 3 headquarters of the Atlanta Police Department. Officers are in full riot gear, one of them saying in a sing-songy voice as she geared up, “It’s gonna be a riot.” A majority of these cops are black.
Scanner chatter keeps the officers apprised of protester movement. A crowd of hundreds is heading here, where an officer told me the precinct had received a threat that it would burn to the ground tonight.
I’m watching two white protesters chastise a line of black cops about “white supremacy.”

When we were in college, we were in line at J in the Box when someone called the cops on students who were half naked & had a blow up doll. Eventually the cops came. They went running, one with the doll. The dude was tackled and handcuffed. They weren't even holding up the line.
I don't even have to tell you they were all white. They all survived the night, as dumb as calling the cops just for that was. Countless times over the years ppl fell asleep drunk in the J in the Box line, the only fast food open past midnight in our tiny college town.

My husband falls asleep in random places. We live a mile away from where #RayshardBrooks was killed by police. A thread on why I don't call police for non violent incidents. 1/
One night, I sent him out for ice cream at 11:45 (yes, I was pregnant). The store was 3 minutes away and closed at midnight. After 4 hours of calling him and getting no response, I left our 3 y.o. with my mom and called an uber so I could begin to look for my husband. 2/
I found him. Asleep in the store's parking lot SANS ICE CREAM. He never made it out the car. He parked and fell asleep.
I knocked on the car window and it scared him. He reacted... wildly...pure fight or flight mode... 3/

On Friday, Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe shot Rayshard Brooks at a Wendy's drive-thru as he was running away w/ a Taser. Mr. Brooks died in hospital. What happened in the minutes before he was killed? @Tina_Kelso & I broke down the critical moments nytimes.com/2020/06/14/us/…
22:33 APD officers are called to Wendy's in South Atlanta. Mr. Brooks had fallen asleep in his vehicle, which was parked in the drive-through, causing other customers to drive around him, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. gbi.georgia.gov/press-releases…

While the media is talking about a burning Wendy’s. Let me tell you a different story of what I saw for many hours standing with protesters at the University Ave. uprising in response to the #RayshardBrooks killing.
-I saw a grieving neighborhood peacefully chanting demands and having hard conversations with law enforcement in response to the killing of one of their own.
-I saw family members of Rayshard call for people to join them shut down the street down with protest until justice is done for their loved one. They started with a small crowd in the morning and grew to hundreds by evening.

In the video, I see a man literally fighting and then running for his life. The ofcr, I can tell you now, will say he felt that #RayshardBrooks was a threat to his life and to others. I know this b/c this has proved so effective for ofcrs who kill innocent Black ppl. Here’s why.
I literally woke up this morning thinking about #RayshardBrooks and abt Tennessee v Garner, the 1985 case in which the SCOTUS made clear that ofcrs cannot shoot and kill a fleeing suspect unless the suspect poses a threat to the ofcr or to others. supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/…
Some subsequent cases have refined this but it is still the law. So why do so many ofcrs do it and get away with it? Because in a country steeped in racist stereotypes and narratives about Black men, the word “threat” does all the work.

I used to tend bar and was very involved in Atlanta nightlife. Would y'all like to hear some stories about things I've seen the cops let drunk white people (ESPECIALLY drunk white women) get away with?

#RayshardBrooks #AtlantaShooting
Let's start with Buckhead. It's a very wealthy, white neighborhood. In the early 2000s there were bars & clubs on every foot of public space. It was common to see drunk or high trust fund kids passed out on the street or in bushes. Nobody ever got arrested for some reason.
Let's head on over to Roswell Road, where I once saw a drunk guy get tossed out by a cop, get in said cops face and start poking the cop in his chest. On his badge. And the cop did nothing. Guess the ethnicity of both.

Folks are trying to rationalize the #AtlantaShooting of #RayshardBrooks bc he resisted arrest. Putting aside whether they should have been called to begin with (he was tapped out in a Wendy's line), it is worth remembering that resisting arrest is not a capital offense. Also...
2/ The fact that these two officers could not subdue Brooks when he first resisted, without a weapon, suggests they shouldn't be cops. And once he gets away w/the taser, threatening no one with it, chasing/shooting him is criminal. They had his Lic #. Could have found him...
3/ Fact is, police CAN go without shooting people in these cases, but in this case and so many others they choose to kill. Oddly, when white folks are beating their ass/resisting, they seem to manage to hold fire...Here are a few examples...
