Just to further clarify folks. #BrightAgesSoWhite #MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #SlaveryArchive #TwitterHistorians This is the issue if you have NO CLUE about the alt-medieval academic ecosystem. Please look at the first two on the right. They are historians (D & S) .1/
Who medieval studies, and I specifically have discussed, as part of the alt-medieval (in long twitter threads), in this IHE article: 2/ insidehighered.com/views/2018/08/…
3/ I really want people to understand 2 things. How white supremacy is structural, STRUCTURAL & the WTGF WS, fascist ecosystem of medieval studies. Every white decision (including the BPOC supporting whiteness decisions) just further cements the structure of white supremacy.

#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race So this is Open Access. This was from the first RaceB4Race conference. But I would like to discuss the long journey this took to get published. Thread. 1/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/17414113/2…
The conference happened in January 2019 because of Academic REJECTION. Specifically Rejected from the @KzooICMS in 2019 of all the Medievalists of Color sessions (except the one where we basically do diversity labor for white people). 2/
@acmrs_asu & @jeffreyjcohen (Dean at Humanities) invited all those rejected to present instead at a symposium at ASU that @acmrs_asu would organize. Since Ayanna Thompson had just taken over as head of @acmrs_asu, she also thought it would be a good time for coalition building 3/

Part II. Thread. Medieval White Rage & the Alt-Medieval. #MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #LitPOC I reference Carol Anderson's work b/c she points to how far white grievance will go into violent white rage during Jim Crow & school desegregation. What will white ppl do 27/
if their white privilege & place in their world is seen as "threatened" by BIPOC ppl. They will push back but they also will go to white rage violence to stop it & the change for equity & justice. Medieval Studies has an entire alt-medieval group entirely based on white rage 28/
This next example shows how white "leftists" become radicalized into the far-right universe. Tom McMaster, a.k.a. Gay Girl in Damascus. "Amina" was seen by online activists as queer Islamic feminist activist. Of course it was a racist catfish 29/ theguardian.com/world/2011/jun…

#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #Bigger6 #BiPOC18 #VicPOC #POC19 #LitPOC Medieval White Rage. This is literally a condensed version of a chapter in my book Alt-Medieval. A book by the way that I am slowing revising b/c (since it's Mental Health Awareness Month) of PTSD 1/
I have an excellent therapist, but it's still trauma work. I discuss this in this podcast which dropped this month. So this entire alt-medieval group have their own medieval, white supremacist 4chan space called Medieval Studies: State of the Field. 2/ podcast.digitalmedievalist.org/episode-5-glob…
Paul Halsall started it b/c he couldn't stop himself from saying racist things @ me & other BIPOC medievalists in medieval FB groups. He got kicked out. The group includes Rachel Fulton Brown. Academic medievalists have been talking & liking her comments there for years. 3/

#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #LitPOC This is a PSA for an incident that happened earlier that smacked of some overt misogynoir. A bunch of those tweets have been erased but I am tweeting now to discuss some things related to ideas of BIPOC scholars & "rigor." 1/
#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #LitPOC There are certain premodern study "skills" or "areas" that white premodern studies loves to wave around as the only way to go & use it as some sort of cudgel for gatekeeping that smacks of a kind of "white premodern only" 2/
#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race #LitPOC so people are in "shock" when premodern BIPOC scholars actually have these skills and in spades. One of them is often book history, material book culture, paleography etc. But the other one discussed is "philology". 3/

Our first month on @a_bit_lit maybe has almost something for almost everyone?

First up, lots of things: @ProfCatherineR (10), @callanjd (19), @earlymodatLancs and @Tostig1066 (11) on stuff, things, surfaces and material culture

youtube.com/abitlit
And then, #raceb4race and #ShakeRace: @sydneeisanelf (14), @bkadams (5) and @s_e_omalley (18) on race, colonialism and marginalisation.
Queer poetry and trans or non-binary gender are brought by @will_tosh (16) and @mollfrith (15), both of them in very different ways asking about the crossovers between practice and scholarship, theatre and other kinds of performance.

#MedievalTwitter #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race This is a long thread that addresses Safety & Secret FB Groups: There are two separate things happening that Abby Ang has conflated as one thing. The secret FB group is separate from the scholarly activist org. Medievalists of Color.
2/ This is made clear in the Constitution. The secret FB group is there for different BIPOC scholars in medieval studies as a safe space to share safety information, safety resources, address potential violence or other harms targeting various group members;
3/it includes sensitive personal information in the group. In fact, the group often has multiple messages about potential fascist security issues at medieval studies conferences to warn other potential vulnerable group members.Moderators sponsor members; It is not open to anyone.

#MedievalTwitter h/t to @DanielleGAllor for reminding me of the critical medieval studies bibliography on rape culture. Let's look at the titles of these texts to make clear the utter disingenuous/libelous and/or badly researched comments of @Real_HistoryGuy et. al. 1/
@DanielleGAllor @Real_HistoryGuy #MedievalTwitter We can begin w/ Kathryn Gradval's 1991 book Ravishing Maidens: Writing Rape in Medieval French Lit. and Law. Hmmm, so are you saying Kathryn Gradval's title is also an indication that "she wants to ravish maidens". 🤔 amzn.to/2QPZJlr
@DanielleGAllor @Real_HistoryGuy #MedievalTwitter Then we have Suzanne Edwards 2015 book The Afterlives of Rape in Medieval English Literature. Which is on sale at the Palgrave sale for $9.99. amzn.to/2rwQj3K

THREAD: It’s true. I’ve been running the @GroupBABEL Twitter account for way too long & no one gives a damn. Not to mention that I no longer want to be associated with this group since they attended @KzooICMS 2019 even though Medievalists of Color were iced out. #MedievalTwitter
To be super-frank, I’ve been (heart)sick because of @GroupBABEL’s inattention to divisive issues in the field ever since 2016 when I urged boycotting the Kalamazoo Congress after Allen Frantzen’s misogynist & racist writings came to light, to no avail. I haven’t been back since.
I spent a lot of time in 2016 ranting about Frantzen’s misogyny & racism (& theft of junior colleagues’ work) & also wrote letters to every learned society begging them to censure him, to no avail. But thank you @JonathanHsy, Suzanne Akbari & @muellerale for helping me with that.

THREAD.

1/ Given how the Int’l. Society of Anglo-Saxonists can’t get its act together to change its name, which is racist, & also has no problem sheltering predators & misogynists who are white men, we need to revisit our intellectual history. #RaceB4Race #MedievalTwitter #ASS
2/ Some scholars favor a name-change because they believe fascist-racist hate groups have misappropriated the subject matter of their field and thus we should distance ourselves from those folk. But others say: it’s not OUR fault that happens & we don’t want to erase our history.
3/ Scholars who believe the only thing wrong with “Anglo-Saxon” is that racist hate groups have appropriated it are terrible scholars, and worse historians. The first 2 attestations in English for “Anglo-Saxonist” are to John Mitchell Kemble (OED) & the 3rd time, in his obituary.

SOOOO excited for the next installment of @ACRMS #RaceB4Race symposia @FolgerLibrary next week. FYI, this is ongoing series of symposia that centers the work of scholars of color. Thread of random thoughts about ways to go forward re #RaceB4Race and #ShakeRace.
warning, I kinda suck at threads, so grab yo coffee. /1.5
I have been thinking of things that need to be done to elevate this work/change the fields. Much of this is #ShakeRace specific, but some have broader applications. /2

OK folks a few more thoughts for #MedievalTwitter on that NYT article as #Kzoo2019 approaches. [THREAD] #LitPOC #NotAMonk
1/ I’m glad that the #NotAMonk convos are pointing out problems with the NYT article's opening quote (Richard Utz, prominent white male medievalist, “speaking for” the field as if it were “apolitical” and as if monks were apolitical — in the past or present).
2/ But such convos are still uneven in naming the harms of such framing: this kind of statement is part of a continued pattern of sidelining marginalized medievalists (esp. BIPOC) and casting such ppl/allies as “inappropriately” political or “imposing” on an innocent field.
