Happy weekend! Lots of people are anxiously awaiting the #JWST images releasing Tuesday. (I've seen them and they're pretty cool!) But did you know many astronomers want to #RenameJWST?

Learn more in this documentary I produced for the @JustSpaceOrg:
I produced the 40-minute JustSpace Alliance documentary in consultation with historians, the authors of the petition, members of the @AAS_Office’s @AasSgma, and queer astronomers across several countries.
NASA Policy Directive 7620 (nodis3.gsfc.nasa.gov/displayDir.cfm…) requires a committee to provide naming recommendations for any major NASA project, with input from "the responsible NASA Centers and contractors." Screenshot from the documen...

Hola! my name is Ale (they/she) and I'm taking part in the #GlobalScienceShow
Today I'll be showing you some of my works about my exploration of the microbial world with drawings! 🦠
Check @GlobalSciShow to follow the whole show🤩

#scicomm #divulgarciencia #comunicacienciachile
I did my PhD in marine #microbiology and now I draw #scicomm comics/zines and cartoons (and a tiny bit of animations) in Spanish&English, to highlight the diversity of the microbial world 🦠and people in STEM✨,
including #queerinstem #bipocinstem
Here a bio-reel👇🏾
The big majority of planet is microscopic and they have a key role in the ecosystem, biogeochemical cycles and evolution of living organisms! 🦠
Our microbial world is huge and amazing!🤩

Yesterday, I learned of the passing of Dr. Rob Lue. Like thousands of others who studied life sciences at Harvard, he was my first professor in a course called LS1a. But Dr. Lue did so much more than just teach a life science class. (1/15)
In one unit, we were talking about enzymes, and he showed us a 3-D model of HIV-1 protease, which he dubbed the "butterfly of death". As our discussion of HIV ended, in the last minutes of class, (2/15)
he pulled out a letter that a friend had written him while they were both in college. The letter was about their friendship, and how his friend wanted so dearly to live longer. He was dying of HIV/AIDS. I remember Dr. Lue telling us how his friend was a gifted swimmer. (3/15)

Why should I care?

I care because 90% of PhDs go to white people, and faculty of color account for only 3.8% of tenure track positions.
I care because 20% of science graduate students were from URM populations, whereas only 12% of graduate students in the geosciences were from underrepresented groups.

I care because white men & women each comprise ~30% of the U.S. population, white men hold 49& of STEM jobs compared to 18% of white women. The % are also low for black & Hispanic women, who make up 7 & 8% of the population, but hold only 2% of STEM jobs. nsf.gov/statistics/201…

1/ Woo! My monster paper with Matt Wilson, "Locomotor and Hippocampal Processing Converge in the Lateral Septum" was just released in @CurrentBiology!! Not only that, but I made a comic to describe my findings!! cell.com/current-biolog…
2/ We used tetrodes to record from CA1 hippocampus and dorsolateral lateral septum, an area innervated by all CA regions of the hippocampus and many regions involved in "motivational" behavior
3/ Some cells in the LS were linearly modulated by the animal's running speed (could be positively or negatively modulated!) and/or by the animal's acceleration (also could be positively or negatively modulated!)

Less than a day tweeting here and I'm already being asked to comment on gender in science/academia. No surprise to any of my fellow #womeninSTEM...
I have a lot to say about women in science - the barriers we face and what we can do to change things for the better. But I also wish that we could sometimes just be scientists, and didn't have to always be Women In Science.
It's not great to feel the pressure to represent an entire marginalised community (like @xkcdComic shows below). Not just #womeninSTEM, but #queerinSTEM #BLACKandSTEM #LatinxinSTEM and a lot of others who feel pressure to be a 'model minority'.
