THREAD: We need your help, y'all. You probably saw Provost Feser's email Monday announcing salary increase program. While the he attempted to positively frame his proposal, it's an insidious attempt to undermine bargaining efforts and the core mission of our #union. Here's why:
The Provost's "salary increase program" was initially presented as a MOA (memorandum of understanding) at the very end of the bargaining session on Monday, leaving no opportunity to negotiate, ask questions, or respond. What's more? We only were given 3 days to accept or reject.
In the e-mail to faculty he presented an implied ultimatum to #union members. Either accept an ambiguous and inequitable salary increase and forego all bargaining for FY2020 salary increases (more on that next), or continue bargaining.

CPS staff who are J1 visa holders received program emails expressing "concern" that picketing might look unfavorable come time for their visa renewals. This is an intimidation tactic.

Call #Lightfoot at 312 744 3300 and tell her #FairContractNow!

From @Anakbayan_Chi member: "Sometimes employers and/or programs get around certain labor laws by arguing that J1 visa holders aren't workers but 'exchange participants' under J1's cultural exchange mission."

"J1 visa holders rack up debts paying recruitment fees so that they can work here, only to face exploitative working conditions and retaliation when they fight for their rights."

Years ago at a Chi Board of Trade protest, traders dropped McDonald’s job apps on us. Now they’re spitting on striking educators. Absolute psychopaths who need to be taxed & taxed & taxed again and kept far away from the general public blockclubchicago.org/2019/10/24/tea… #PutItInWriting
this is what traders in Chicago’s financial district are spending their time doing. totally normal
this teacher has been spit on by 1) five-year-olds and 2) grown-ass finance dudes making obscene amounts of money and robbing the rest of the city and the world blind in the process

I was a CPS student from 2nd grade until graduating highschool. And due to the culture of Chicago, especially communities of color, a common question when someone says they’re from Chicago. Is “what highschool did you go to?”
I went from a school that is now closed (Goldblatt), to one (Leslie Lewis) that is 86% low income but that *now* has a school rating of 1. Not when I was there haha. To a hs (Lane Tech) that is selective enrollment.

1/ #ME: Feeling a way about the incuriosity/obvious bias in the press. Thought I'd annotate an article with my thoughts/analysis.
2/ #CPS: The CTU won’t agree to the money until it gets the other items on what Jackson calls its “social justice bargaining” agenda.

#ME How do Black and Brown children get anything w/o a justice oriented agenda? Or, a demand? Better question: Why don’t they already have it?
3/ #CPS: That includes everything from affordable housing , a dramatic increase in “community schools”, enforceable caps on class size, mandatory hiring of support personnel written into the contract and more teacher prep time with potential to shorten the school day.

#CPS is now on the “to clarify” talking point this morning. They in here saying: “what had happened was we really didn’t mean to say we were done bargaining.”
Explaining the proposal and back pedaling furiously. #developing
Swear I don’t get how the table says one thing, the mayor says another and then the CEO says another 🤷🏾‍♀️

Presser from @CTULocal1 being live streamed here. Team says @ChiPubSchools Board of Ed Prez Miguel del Valle made an appearance at bargaining today: facebook.com/pg/ctulocal1/v…
@CTULocal1 @ChiPubSchools "So... not a lot of progress today," @SharkeyCTU1 says.
@CTULocal1 @ChiPubSchools @SharkeyCTU1 City could be hoping for "a dive and catch," but don't expect us to go to midnight on Oct. 16, Sharkey says. I can't put out a notice for our delegates to meet at 2a, turn around and teach at 6a. "We're going to need some time to read it... Now is the time for stuff to move."

As a young educator, I participated in nonprofit teacher training program where it was drilled into us that class size didn't matter, that students' ability to learn was dependent entirely on our abilities and techniques as educators #FairContractNow #PutItInWriting Image
The program was funded by the biggest names in the private sector, at the height of the charter school push. It's rhetoric was devoted to convincing us that the culpability for the disfunction in public ed. lay with students and teachers #FairContractNow #PutItInWriting
This rhetoric was toxic, not just because when we failed in many of our efforts as inexperienced educators we were made to blame ourselves and our students, but also because we were trained to look away from the roots of inequity in public ed. #PutItInWriting #FairContractNow
