I don’t know who needs to see this today, but I’ve put together a collection of caribou photographs—all of the Porcupine herd that migrates every year to the Arctic Refuge to have their young.
Let’s begin with this aerial view of the Niguanak River. Photo: Fran Mauer, 1986. (1) Image
Mauer estimates that there were 60,000 (!) caribou below him when he took that picture.

Here’s another aerial view—this one taken by Subhankar Banerjee in 2002. It shows pregnant caribou crossing the frozen Coleen River, and it's one of my favorite photos of all time. (2) Image
Wilbur Mills, one of the first photographers to visit what was then called the Arctic National Wildlife Range, took this photo in 1974. It shows two clusters of bulls, walking with apparent purpose, as they cross the frozen Kongakut River. (3) Image

With yesterday’s announcement that the Trump administration plans to hold fossil fuel lease sales in the Arctic Refuge sometime this year, let’s consider what’s at stake in this fight.

A (long) THREAD—with a MAP as our guide. [1/n]
At first glance, this might look like any other map—with a dotted line to mark the border between Canada and the U.S. Yet look closely at the two curvy lines, for they tell the map’s true story.

Map produced by the Gwich’in Steering Committee, @OurArcticRefuge. [2/n] Image
One line traces the transnational range of the Porcupine caribou herd, the other the homeland of the Gwich’in. What is most striking is how the two lines repeatedly intersect—showing the interconnections between migrating caribou and Indigenous communities. @ACaribouPeople [3/n]

More outstanding reporting from @adamfederman on Trump administration efforts to suppress science and marginalize Indigenous voices in their rush to develop the Arctic Refuge and other Alaskan lands.
#ProtectTheArctic

politico.com/news/magazine/…
And it's worth noting: this suppression of science is nothing new. As I explain in my forthcoming book DEFENDING THE ARCTIC REFUGE, pro-development Interior officials have repeatedly engaged in skullduggery.

Mike O'Meara, cartoon for the Homer News, 1987. Image
Yet, as @adamfederman explains, the present moment is also profoundly different from the past.

Never before, not under Reagan or the 2 Bushes, did it reach this point. The DOI plans, BEFORE 2020 ENDS, to hold lease sales for the Arctic Refuge.

The stakes have never been higher.

I look forward to reading @billmckibben's Climate Crisis Newsletter every week, but I was particularly excited to see the one that arrived today. It features @bernademientief of the Gwich'in Steering Committee talking about the Arctic Refuge struggle. (1)

newyorker.com/news/annals-of…
A couple highlights:

"Many people are not aware that this is not just about protecting our polar bears but this is about the indigenous voices being ignored, this is about a whole identity, about a people’s entire way of life being destroyed for profit." (2)
"These lands, these animals, these waters are our survival . . . We stand up for our future generations, the ones that do not have a voice yet, and we carry on 'in a good way' the love, kindness, and strength of our ancestors." (3)

"What side of history do you want to be on?"

With the Trump administration claiming that they will hold lease sales for oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge this year, now seems like a good time to reup this piece from 2018. #ProtectTheArctic

truthout.org/articles/arcti…
It is based largely on testimony from Gwich'in leaders like @bernademientief and Tonya Garnett, environmental activists like @LenaMDC and @noel_johnny, and many others who urgently want to protect the Arctic Refuge from fossil fuel development. @OurArcticRefuge @ACaribouPeople
The Trump administration is trying to lease off this land before the political landscape changes. They are rushing to develop, even as evidence of climate change, species loss and other serious environmental problems continues to mount. We can’t let them pull this off.

One of the chapters of my forthcoming book about the Arctic Refuge is called "Science and Skullduggery"--it looks at gov't suppression and distortion of science during the Reagan years and beyond.

Here, we have what appears to be yet another example of Trumpian skullduggery.
“What it looks like to me is they’re giving industry the opportunity to negate the study. . . . This is a very directed way to undermine the science.”

@OurArcticRefuge What do polar bear dens look like?

Here's an amazing photograph by Subhankar Banerjee of a denning site--with tracks of mother and cubs etched in the snow.

In places like this, the admin. wants to do seismic testing and drill for oil (while disregarding peer-reviewed science). Image

"These Maps Paint a Dark Future For the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge If Trump Has His Way"

"They show the infrastructure could span the entire coastal plain, stripping caribou of essential habitat."

The fight is not over; the struggle continues. “We will stand up to anyone who wants to go into this place,” said @bernademientief of @OurArcticRefuge.

@bernademientief @OurArcticRefuge Here is one of the hypothetical maps showing how fossil fuel development would create a "sprawling network" all across the Arctic coastal plain. Image

I'm teaching a new course this term on Film and Environmental History. This week we watched New Deal docs about the Dust Bowl and Mississippi River floods (The Plow and The River) and finished with the animated #GreenNewDeal film narrated by @AOC and posted on @theintercept
Students were fascinated by the ND docs and also enjoyed @mollycrabapple's illustrations and AOC's focus on climate and justice. We discussed science, storytelling, and ecol. crisis--then and now--and contrasted the racial politics of the ND with the GND's more inclusive vision.
The Intercept film (A Message from the Future) is here: theintercept.com/2019/04/17/gre…

Next week's class: Godzilla (!) and the history of radioactive fallout.

BREAKING: @GoldmanSachs just became the first major American bank to prohibit financing for new Arctic oil, thermal coal mining, and coal power projects worldwide! 👏👏 #DefundClimateChange sierraclub.org/press-releases…
More than a dozen global banks have now ruled out funding Arctic oil projects, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Trump & oil companies want to destroy this special place, but big $ is saying no.

My statement for @SierraClub: sierraclub.org/press-releases… #ProtectTheArctic
The fight to protect the Arctic Refuge has been led by the Gwich’in Nation & @OurArcticRefuge. Victories like this would not be possible without powerful advocacy by @bernademientief & others.

If the Arctic Refuge is such a good investment for companies, then why is @bp_America pulling out of Alaska? What does BP know that @HilcorpEnergyCo and @realDonaldTrump doesn't? Via @shankman

.@realDonaldTrump, your plan to open the #Arctic Refuge to oil and gas development is falling apart. Shall we review the facts?
-A top official has resigned
-The top seismic company is under investigation
-One of the biggest players in AK oil is leaving
Oh, and did we mention that revenue from destroying the Arctic Refuge will only yield $45 million - less than 3% of what you forecasted.

1/The Trump admin has once again failed to #ProtectTheArctic. Leaked @USFWS memos from @PEERorg find that govt scientists recommended >20 additional studies for the draft EIS for drilling in the #ArcticRefuge. Read more here: americanprogress.org/?p=471433
2/You know what else? A new @amprog analysis finds that over 99% of people who commented on @BLMNational’s plan to drill for oil in the Arctic Refuge are AGAINST the proposal.
3/Drilling in the #ArcticRefuge will have a detrimental impact on Porcupine caribou calving grounds, which are a vital resource for the Gwich’in Nation. Yet @BLMNational is relying on outdated studies to make their decisions.

This is an important message from the North Slope of AK, not just for political leaders, but for env orgs as well: "When Iñupiat voices are ignored or silenced, we miss important possible solutions and contributions to the dialogue."

"There are many Iñupiat who want to protect our lands, water and culture from further oil development. In Alaska, we are at the forefront of climate change."
"When our lands are contaminated and desecrated and the animals are too far to hunt and harvest or are too sick to consume, is oil going to sustain us?"

.@AGOWA and our office are leading 16 AGs against a Trump Admin. plan to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling – a flawed plan that will deepen our climate crisis and devastate wildlife in the fragile arctic ecosystem. #ProtectTheArctic #ANWR Image
The Refuge is home to caribou, polar bears, wolves, and migratory birds – all of which are facing the daily threat of climate change as permafrost thaws and arctic temperatures rise more than twice as quickly as the global average. #ProtectTheArctic #ANWR
The President says drilling will offset a billion dollars in revenue lost from his corporate tax cut.

Our independent economic study shows this isn't true.

And drilling would never be worth the havoc wreaked on wildlife, arctic ecosystems, & our climate. #ProtectTheArctic #ANWR
