The more time my daughter is away from drugs and her addiction (6 months), the more she starts to open up to me.

My latest conversation with her, which I share with her permission, is not only heartbreaking, but infuriating.
She shared this today:

Last year, she was living in an all women SLE and was working toward creating a better life for herself. She had 3 months of sobriety.

Sam got Covid and at that time, protocol was to send people living in SLE’s to a Project Room Key Motel.
What my daughter experienced in that Project Room Key motel is horrific.

“Mom, there were drugs everywhere. People up all night screaming and fighting. Prostitutes and pimps would be walking in the halls. It was bad.”

She relapsed in that Project Room Key motel in Oakland.

While the Lucky Duck Foundation may want to direct how governments operate these shelters, the fact is Chula Vista made the safer choice of using hotel rooms vs. a more dangerous congregate tent shelter.

1/3
In #SanDiego county, the weekly health and human services reports show shelters are currently responsible for 353 #COVID19 cases among people experiencing homelessness- or about 25% of the total.

See sandiegocounty.gov/content/dam/sd…

Finally- Chula Vista also made a better financial choice.

If they use hotels via #ProjectRoomkey it will cost nothing thanks to #FEMA and California Office of Emergency Services reimbursements.

#ProjectRoomKey, the FEMA-paid program providing hotel rooms to the unhoused, allows security to unlock & enter participants’ rooms without notice at any time.

Many unhoused women have experienced sexual violence. Can’t imagine why that’s uncomfortable for them.
The first place I lived in LA, a maintenance worker unlocked my door and entered while I was showering.

He claimed he thought I was scheduled for maintenance. Maybe that’s true.

It was TERRIFYING, and that’s without the trauma history living on the streets will give a person.
A large subset of the LA unhoused population consists of working people with exactly three things standing between them and housing:

1. First month
2. Last month
3. Deposit

Denying them privacy and refusing to treat them like competent adults provides none of the three.

1/The response of #SanDiego Mayor @Kevin_Faulconer when it comes to #homelessness and/or reacting to people protesting his policies that increasingly criminalize families who are #homeless : Call the police

Now: he wants to be Governor of #California
2/But @Kevin_Faulconer has badly mismanaged #ProjectRoomkey a @Cal_OES program to provide emergency #COVID funds & hotel rooms for people at risk of #coronavirus

#SanDiego is LAST in CA to use these funds to provide safe, private, secure housing to unsheltered San Diegans
3/ Instead: under @Kevin_Faulconer the @RTFHSD @sdhousingcommision @SDConventionCtr has been re-directing funding to keep the Convention Center operating as a shelter for about 900 people- at a cost of $5.7 million/month
