How did I end up involved in @Principles_1st? I noticed young attorney’s tweets in 2019 that resonated w/me. @HeathMayo had courage & foresight to speak up for principles instead of party personalities. I resigned from #SCGOP & decided to put my efforts in w/#PrinciplesFirst. 1/
If you don’t follow @HeathMayo yet, you should. His voice of reason & consistency is needed in a political landscape built on hypocrisy & opportunism. His leadership has created a grassroots movement that continues to grow. People crave authenticity & integrity. 2/ Image
So now we’re four years into creation of @Principles_1st & we’ve held THREE national summits that have attracted attendees from across America. This is data from last month’s summit. People gave of their time, talent & treasure to participate. That is how a movement grows. 3/ Image

A word on the Summit. This will be our third Principles First Summit and it will come at what will be a critical time for the principled lane to pause and reflect on America's future.

The Summit theme this year will be: Preserving American Institutions.
The agenda will focus on how to defend the liberal foundation of our republic & strengthen & improve core American institutions—including each branch of the federal gov’t, state gov’t, our Constitution and courts, businesses, armed forces, faith institutions, schools, and others.
Between panel discussions there will be keynote speeches from principled political leaders, including potential 2024 presidential candidates, who will share their vision for the future with our attendees from all over the country.

🚨 2023 PRINCIPLES FIRST SUMMIT 🚨

This is a critical time for our country & the Summit will be an important moment to gather & chart a better way forward.

Due to demand this year, we shifted the dates by one week and secured a larger venue.

.@whignewtons has spent her career in conservative circles at the top of the legal profession and now at @thedispatch championing the Constitution & the rule of law in a principled way. We are thrilled to welcome her to the Summit stage.

.@AdamKinzinger routinely stood for principle in Congress & always defended the truth, even when it wasn’t easy. One of just two Rs to serve on the @January6thCmte, he put country first. We are delighted to welcome him back to the Summit stage.

@HeathMayo I had mine.
My home district:
—Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR05). Endorsed by Elise Stefanik and supporting the “Big Lie”.
Outside of here:
—Mike Erickson (OR06)
—Joe Kent (WA03)
@HeathMayo I have no choice but vote to Jamie McLeod-Skinner over Chavez-DeRemer. And support Andrea Salinas over Erickson and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez over Kent. #CountryOverParty #PrinciplesFirst

You’ll hear a lot from the CPAC stage the next few days, but it won’t remotely resemble conservatism.

Conservatism, properly practiced, doesn’t propagate conspiracy theories about stolen elections; it doesn’t make exceptions to the Constitution; it doesn’t bow to one man.
CPAC should just be honest about what it is now and stop feigning any allegiance to ideas or principles. It exists as an outlet for politicians and grift merchants to peddle their Trumpist wares.

Schlapp charges anywhere from $330 to $2500 per head & takes a big cut for himself.
It doesn’t have to be this way. We don’t have to pretend everything’s fine; that Jan 6 wasn’t a product of lies; that the GOP cares about serious debate. We can lead instead.

Let’s go in a new, better direction. #PrinciplesFirst 🇺🇸 eventbrite.com/e/principles-f…

We’re excited to announce a new #PrinciplesFirst project: The Pillars.

We’ve outlined our principles, but we didn’t pull them from thin air. They are rooted in a rich history of ideas that dates back hundreds of years. This project will survey that history over the coming weeks. Image
We start with one of the earliest thinkers: Sir Edmund Burke (1729-1797). Burke is widely regarded as the father of conservatism, which he grounded in humility & respect for the past. He celebrated the wisdom of order & tradition & warned against populist demagogues. Image
Burke opposed state-centric views of proper governance in favor of gradualism, organic order, and age-tested institutions. The practical fruits of human experience led him to preach the value of habit, instinct, custom, and faith.

You don’t beat or outlast Trump by becoming Trump. I get what happened to Rick during the 2016 election, Inget it. but this is just soulless. And he should know better.

At the #PrinciplesFirst conference over the weekend, I was inspired by panelist @ReedHowardVA’s observation (see QT) that America has multiple foundings. 1/
Each time America betters itself to live up to its originating aspirational principles of freedom and equality under law (see: end of slavery, suffrage, Civil Rights Movement, and more), we are founded anew.
“This isn’t who we are” has never (at least, *should* never’ve) referred to the worst tendencies of the historical American zeitgeist (isolationism, nationalism, bigotry, racism...) Rather, it compares our endless, collective shortcomings to the grandeur of our ideals.

THREAD: What is principled conservatism?

We look forward to hearing your ideas at the Summit this Saturday, but our grassroots huddles have been thinking through the answer for a while. Here are some of our principles..

The very first one? Integrity & character matter.
Principle #2. This is a big one for us. All citizens are Americans and none of us is more American than any other. We all deserve dignity and respect and owe both to each other as fellow countrymen.
Principle #3. Conservatism should stand for facts & rationality. Lies and dishonesty have become so commonplace in Washington that our enemies are now using our disregard for the truth against us.

I voted for you, Marco. I traveled to NH, SC, & FL to door-knock for you & gave you money when I was still a student & barely had any.

This makes me regret it. I’m not media. I’m just a conservative citizen who thinks principles matter. I once thought you did, too. I was wrong.
Hey, @MarcoRubio: In case you forgot, here’s a reminder from one of your principled conservative supporters who believed in you & fought for you—and who you let down.
I even organized this group of law students to carpool up to NH from CT to knock doors for you in the snow. And now you insult us & say we’re making up “media words.” Give me a break. Some of us actually cared.

“Sure, Trump aimed & pulled the trigger—but, ask yourself: why the hell was the person standing there?!”

— Every Congressional Republican
“Sure, he may have loaded the gun, aimed, pulled the trigger, and disposed of the gun in a top-secret file cabinet meant for military secrets—but, let’s be honest: Trump’s too dumb to actually intend to shoot someone.”

—Ben Shapiro
“I don’t want to hear anything about guns or shooting people. I’ve got no opinion on the matter. I do have an opinion on a bogus grand jury proceeding where Trump can’t cross-examine the witnesses. I don’t care if that’s how grand juries work!”

LETTER TO GOP: The President is yet again invoking “emergency powers” to unilaterally do something he is unable to get Congress to approve. The Mexico tariff violates separation of powers & free trade principles. Sign the #PrinciplesFirst letter here: bit.ly/2EV2o6t
"As principled conservatives, we expect more than verbal opposition to this move – we expect action. Quit deferring your power to the executive & stand up for American consumers. We were never meant to be ruled by emergency declaration. Do your job." bit.ly/2EV2o6t
"Since the President began implementing tariffs, consumers have suffered tremendously for no cognizable benefit in return. AAF estimates that tariffs levied through May will cost American consumers $64 billion annually, or roughly $300 – 800 per family." bit.ly/2EV2o6t

Wow. This is embarrassing (and sad). This NR symposium published in Feb. 2016 is a who's who of "conservatives" who once paid lip-service to our principles and then abandoned them to kiss Trump's ring.

Let's go through some of the highlights...
nationalreview.com/2016/01/donald…
.@GlennBeck: "When conservatives desperately needed allies in the fight against big government, Trump didn’t stand on the sidelines. He consistently advocated that your money be spent, that your government grow, and that your Constitution be ignored." nationalreview.com/2016/01/donald…
.@DLoesch: "Just a few years ago, I was receiving threats for promoting conservative policies and conservative principles — neither of which Donald Trump seems to care about. Yet he’s leading.

Popularity over principle — is this the new Right?" nationalreview.com/2016/01/donald…

Let's be real, @HeathMayo - #PrinciplesFirst is a facade.

This is about being #NeverTrump first.
You laud conservatives for holding Bush 41 to his "no new taxes" pledge, and the tea party for fighting back against profligacy.

The National Emergency declaration is the result of exactly the same dynamic - the base DEMANDING that President Trump stick to his promises.
The issue, @HeathMayo, isn't the *lack* of principle among nationalists.

It's that you don't *share* our principles.

Here's where you discuss what you think conservatism is about.

Funny - I don't see border security or sovereignty discussed AT ALL.

"We still care about the same issues we cared about before Trump descended the golden escalator. Specifically, we actually care that the national debt continues to increase despite a Republican in the White House. "
"We worry about spending... We’re “pro-life,” but feel that should include more than just getting justices appointed to overturn Roe V Wade. We still care about free markets. But most of all, we still care about truth, integrity, values, and The Constitution."
