(2/9) In den letzten 2 Jahren konnten wir beobachten, wie Dauerfrostböden in mehreren Regionen, wie etwa Sibirien, großflächig zu tauen begannen. Dabei ist entscheidend, dass dieser Tauvorgang tiefer reicht als der sonst übliche, bis maximal 2 Metern Tiefe reichende, Auftauboden.
(3/9) Der Permafrostboden ist zudem einer der gefährlichsten #Rückkopplungseffekte, da sich in diesem große Mengen organischen Materials befinden, welches von Mikroorganismen zu #Methan oder #CO2 abgebaut werden kann.

The 45C reading is land surface temp – how hot the surface is to the touch – which is commonly measured by satellites.
The 38C reading is surface air temp – how warm the air is just above the ground. This is what is you usually see in weather forecasts and climate data.

First up are photos from Miriam Jones @USGS. She has had to develop new coring techniques because of the inundation caused by abrupt thaw. Check out the giant peat popsicle - a great record that we can use to reconstruct past vegetation and carbon storage in the ecosystem.
#Permafrost field work often happens end of summer or fall when active layer is at its maximum depth. This allows us to really target the permafrost rather than the stuff at the surface that freezes/thaws. But sometimes we misjudge the weather! Here I am w/ frost probe in hand!
